Livingston's Scottish Premiership game against Aberdeen has been called off as the home side's all-weather artificial pitch is frozen.

The Lions are one of several Scottish top-flight teams, including Hamilton and Kilmarnock - to have a FIFA-approved synthetic pitch in their home stadium but not even the plastic surface could deter the brittle Scottish winter.

Temperatures hit 0 degrees celsius on Wednesday afternoon in the Livingston area ahead of the match with Derek McInnes' Aberdeen.

A pitch inspection was carried out at the Tony Macaroni Arena at 2pm on Wednesday but an area of the pitch that lies in the shade was not able to thaw in time for kick-off - which was set for 4pm.

A Livingston statement read on Wednesday: 'Despite the very best efforts of all the club staff over the last 36 or so hours, today's game with Aberdeen has fallen victim of the freezing conditions and has been postponed.'

It is the second postponed game Aberdeen have been met with since the start of the season after their August trip to Celtic but postponed due to breach of the coronavirus rules.

Celtic's Boli Bolingoli travelled to Spain ahead of the fixture and did not quarantine upon his return to Scotland as the country's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon accused footballers of being 'incapable of living up to their responsibilities'.

That match between Aberdeen and Celtic has been rearranged for February 17 and if the Livingston clash is replayed in the winter, it could mean a busy winter schedule for McInnes' Dons

Gary Holt's Livingston were looking to continue their first up to Scottish top-flight table after four consecutive wins.

McInnes' Aberdeen, meanwhile, were looking to keep the pressure on league leaders Rangers who visited St Mirren on Wednesday.
