Lothar Matthaus has launched a scathing attack on Pep Guardiola by insisting that he stole the Champions League trophy from Manchester City because of his questionable team selection for the final.
Boss Guardiola has been accused on several occasions of tinkering with a winning formula, moves that have proved costly in several crunch ties during his Etihad tenure, and he has come under fresh fire after the defeat in Porto.
Leading the way with his criticism is Bayern Munich and Germany great Matthaus, who has savaged Guardiola's choices as 'inexplicable and unforgiveable' and even claimed his time at City may now be over.
Having opted to field no recognised defensive midfielder, and favoured a false nine, Guardiola was left helpless on the touchline as his City team failed to break down Chelsea, who went on to win through Kai Havertz's goal.
The surprisingly limp display from the Premier League champions saw plenty of the blame pinned on Guardiola, and Matthaus has suggested the manner of the loss may spark discontent in the dressing room.
In his column for Sky, Matthaus wrote: 'He stole the Champions League from the club and the fans through his line-up and he has to rightly hear the harsh criticism from all sides now.'
He then went on to add: 'I am sure that there will be internal discussions about whether to part with him. The players will doubt him since that final.
'He had to try something again, present an imaginary ingenuity at the worst possible moment, and totally deserved to lose.'
With no Fernandinho or Rodri to anchor down City in the centre of the field, Chelsea looked comfortable in large parts of the game and defended superbly after half-time to seal their second success in the competition.
And, despite City still winning two trophies this season, Guardiola's credentials have been heavily scrutinised by Matthaus, who believes he was guilty of making a coach's 'worst' mistake at the weekend.
'Some of the players on the field didn't even know where they were going because he placed them in positions that were unfamiliar to them,' Matthaus added.
'That's the worst thing a coach can do. Inexplicable and unforgivable. He's guaranteed to have lost a lot of credit for everyone, both internally and externally. Most of all with his players. And that can hardly be regained.
'I wouldn't be surprised if Pep Guardiola's time at Manchester City is over now.'
This is not the first time that Matthaus has openly taken aim at former Bayern Munich boss Guardiola, however. City's shock Champions League exit at the hands of Lyon last season led to similar criticism.
'Pep Guardiola weakened the team because he wanted to do something special again,' Matthaus had said. 'This has happened to him a lot in the past.'
After City's defeat by Chelsea saw their wait for a first Champions League trophy extended for at least another season, former Tottenham man Jamie O'Hara labelled Guardiola's approach a 'disgrace'.
'I couldn't believe what I was watching,' O'Hara told talkSPORT. 'It's one of the worst performances I've seen from Manchester City in a long time. Bottle jobs. And an absolute disaster of a team selection from Pep Guardiola.'
He soon added: 'It was a disgrace from Pep Guardiola.'

exactly lothar!! pep lost it!! Chelsea didn't win it! same stupid decisions he made at bayern!! I mean who all of a sudden decides to put a 32 goal 15 assist cam (Thomas Müller) on the bench in a champions league semi final!!! surprised he didn't do it to 45 goal Lewandowski same game and play götze as his false 9!! amazing manager arguably still the best ever but he over thinks these big games and has cost bayern and city ucl titles that were there for the taking against much poorer opposition!!

Don’t get me wrong pep Guardiola is coach I admire a lot, I really admire his style of play, but sometimes he want to be too perfect and end up destroying everything, the kind of players he had at Bayern Munich for the 3 seasons if he didn’t over thinking he would have won champions league there, same thing at Man City, the season we had 100 points that season he had the chance to make to go all the way to win the champions league, due to over thinking did some rotation and lost the game. Last season did the same mistake with Lyon and got knocked out. This season you have done very good in the group matches to crossed the quarter finals to reach the finals, at finals you decided to overthink again and lost it. I don’t understand him when it come to this. Till now I don’t understand what is the reason for using such lineup against Chelsea in the finals, FA cup you tried similar experiment it didn’t work, our home game with Chelsea you again did similar experiment again you lost the game. The big game, the champions league finals you end up doing worst experiment with the same team that has beaten you twice already, at the end you lost the game and break millions of Man City fans heart and you come telling us your team was great that day. Is this man serious? How tactical are you as a coach? The winning team you dismantle it and decided to use different lineup. To me he has done his best so far, we thank him for taking us to reach this far, I think Man City should give zidane the job, we had enough carabao cup, we need the uefa champions league now. With the squad we have and going to sign additional players if you give this team to zidane I believe he can take Man City to win the champions league. That’s why I like Chelsea owner, you don’t do well you are a gonna he try someone else and he succeeds. No harm in trying, Am surprised they give pep too much power at city, so none of at the technical staffs couldn’t even advise him about the lineup he used for the champions league finals? I am shocked. How can you fight hard to reach the top and decided to use the final game for experiment, no serious coach will take such a risk.

Every failure has more scrutiny than success..... If City win that trophy with that same lineup what would've been people's responses????? He took those decisions based on what he thought was the right system to win the match...... We are too quick to judge on people's mishaps forgetting about all the good they've done...... I'm not a City fan, and certainly not Pep's fan...... Just look at what he's accomplished in this time that he's been at City.... The transformation in the team's football, mentality and the drive to win..... Surely he'll win it next season, because that's what he dies best...

I’m sure you only watched the final and not the other games in which Tuchel also beat pep. Tuchel figured a way to soffocate city and pep has been trying to find hope to overwhelm or break out of that lock

shame Keep crying 😭 and I won't feel sorry for pain ,to remind you Chelsea won Bayern Munich in 2012 and win again Man city in 2021 so to win champions League is not with mouth before the game.Congratulations to Chelsea FC the Best team in world.
