Luton late goal against Palace shows glimmer of hope in their relegation battle

Andros Townsend has been around the block enough times to know there will be plenty of twists and turns ahead in the race for Premier League survival.

But he also appreciates that you've got to stay within touching distance of the pack to stand any chance of success in the dash for a spot above the dreaded dotted line.

That's why Saturday's dramatic 96th-minute equaliser from the head of Cauley Woodrow — after Jean-Philippe Mateta had given Crystal Palace the lead — felt so significant for Luton.

Rob Edwards' side have hit something of a sticky patch in recent weeks.

Injuries to key players have played their part, as has a fixture list which has included successive games against Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Aston Villa.

A hard-earned point at Selhurst Park stopped the rot which threatened to set in after four straight league defeats.

'When we come to this place, a difficult place to go with the new manager and the crowd buzzing, we know we can get a result,' said Townsend, who came off the bench against his old side to set up Woodrow's last-gasp goal.

'I've been in relegation battles pretty much my whole career and it's just about staying intact at this time of the season.

'We're one good game on Wednesday (against Bournemouth) away from being outside the drop zone, which is massive at this stage.'
