Lyon 3-1 Arsenal (4-3 agg): Brand completes comeback to eliminate Champions League holders

Jule Brand was the hero as Lyon overturned a first-leg deficit to reach the Women's Champions League final with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal, beating the holders 4-3 on aggregate.

A strong first-half performance saw Lyon score twice to turn the tie around and reach half-time with the advantage.

Alessia Russo struck back for Arsenal with 15 minutes left to level the tie on aggregate, but Brand fired in an 86th-minute winner to stun the Gunners.

Lyon could have taken the lead within the first two minutes, with Melchie Dumornay putting it on a plate for Ada Hegerberg, who got it all wrong from close range, missing the ball.

Lindsey Heaps then saw a header ruled out following a VAR check as Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar was deemed to be impeded from the corner, but Lyon got their chance from the spot.

Lotte Wubben-Moy caught Dumornay in the box, and Van Domselaar saved Wendie Renard's first penalty. She came off her line to do so, however, and the Lyon captain converted her second attempt in the 21st minute.

And the hosts got their second goal 15 minutes later; Arsenal failed to deal with a corner, and Kadadiatou Diana stretched to acrobatically volley it home at the far post.

Arsenal improved on their disappointing first half after the break, with Stina Blackstenius and Olivia Smith hitting the woodwork before Russo popped up to bundle in a scrappy but potentially crucial goal.

But, with extra time in sight, Lyon upped the pressure once more, and Brand proved to be the hero as she peeled away on the right of the box to curl a shot in off the far post, with the goal standing after a lengthy VAR review.

Last season, it was Lyon who took a lead over Arsenal into the second leg, only to be stunned by a comeback, but they turned the tables this season.

It is the first time the holders have been eliminated from the Champions League at the semi-final stage since 2015-16, with Arsenal's exit ending a run of seven straight progressions for defending champions at the last-four stage.

In the first leg, Lyon posted their lowest totals for shots and shots on target in the Champions League this season, but there was no doubting their intensity at Groupama Stadium.

Jonatan Giraldez's side had 13 shots worth 1.39 expected goals (xG), with six of those hitting the target, while Arsenal only got two of their seven attempts on target.
