Michael Carrick has done a brilliant job since taking over at Manchester United on an interim basis
Michael Carrick is reportedly growing increasingly likely to be confirmed as the next permanent Manchester United manager after steering the Reds to the brink of Champions League qualification. The former Middlesbrough boss was handed the interim head coach role back in January following Ruben Amorim's dismissal and has impressed at Old Trafford.
United were in no hurry to name a permanent replacement for the Portuguese coach, maintaining that an appointment would be made over the summer. The club have travelled this road before, with many drawing parallels to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time at the helm, which ultimately ended in disappointment.
Carrick has held just one permanent managerial post at Boro in the Championship, leading them to the play-offs in his first season, before being relieved of his duties in June 2025 following a tenth-place finish.
Despite his previous spell as interim boss at Old Trafford, a number of pundits and supporters called for a more seasoned manager to be brought in on a permanent basis.
The Daily Mail reports that United have conducted background checks on potential managerial candidates, but will not appoint anyone with commitments to this summer's World Cup. There had been suggestions the Reds hierarchy would bide their time regarding the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti, Mauricio Pochettino and Julian Nagelsmann all involved with their respective international teams.
However, the latest report indicates United are hesitant to contemplate any manager competing in the United States, while they're also set to dismiss Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva and Eddie Howe in preference of Carrick.
That said, PSG boss Luis Enrique may have altered the club's approach, although he's believed to be content in the French capital and is close to penning a new deal. That fresh contract is anticipated to grant him greater authority at the Ligue 1 outfit.
While the report suggests there remains a possibility the club explore alternative options, they maintain the due diligence undertaken by the Reds hierarchy means there would be a 'degree of certainty' that Carrick represents the right appointment.
The Guardian reports United bosses remain undecided whether Carrick is the individual to assume control on a permanent basis.
Nevertheless, United legend Ryan Giggs has lavished praise on Carrick and the work his former teammate has delivered at the club since returning to the dugout.
"For once in a long time, you're excited about the games," United's record appearance-maker told Rio Ferdinand Presents.
"I've obviously got mates who are season ticket holders, and they can't wait for the next game and they're looking forward to it.
"It was unfortunate the result against Leeds (losing 2-1 last Monday) but obviously we're all cheering Michael on. He's an ex team-mate and he's a brilliant bloke so we want him to do well."

I don't want Man united story to be, we didn't value what we had until we lost it. Yeah Ole's time was a disaster but mainly because the midfield was neglected but then they bought an aged ronaldo and sancho for him and expected the league title in return. I think this time they are more thorough with recruitment so buy 3 midfielders, 2 fullbacks, 1 cb, 1 Leftmidfieder (Ndiaye preferred) and a back up CF to compete in all fronts and see what carrick does with that.
