Man City closing in on deadline-beating £58.7m transfer after shock decision

Manchester City are closing in on a £58.7million deal for Andrea Cambiaso after the Juventus full-back shocked his club by ruling himself out of their crunch Champions League clash with Benfica.

City have had a £54.5million offer for Cambiaso rejected as they look to replace Kyle Walker, with the Italian club demanding £75.5million.

But it is believed that a compromise will be hammered out this week after Juve coach Thiago Motta revealed that the 24-year-old told the club he was still feeling the ankle injury that forced him to miss his team’s first Serie A defeat of the season at Napoli at the weekend.

Motta said: "Cambiaso won’t be there. You know he’s had this situation with his ankle, but he was trying to help the team. He has said that he prefers to take his time to get back to 100 percent."

Juventus are already looking for a replacement, with Feyenoord’s David Hancko their No 1 target.

Cambiaso came through the ranks of Genoa before joining Juventus in an £8.5million deal in the summer of 2022. He caught Pep Guardiola’s eye when he helped the Turin club beat the Blues 2-0 in the Champions League in December.

Cambiaso’s arrival at the Etihad would take City’s transfer window splurge close to £200million following the arrivals of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Juma Bah.

City have committed to a £250m transfer window splurge to help the team become the dominant force of English football again, with a nine-and-a-half year deal worth £240m handed to striker Erling Haaland.

And that is unlikely to be the end of the Blues’ spending spree after Atalanta placed a £50million valuation on the head of Brazilian midfielder Ederson.

Juventus have offered City the chance to sign Douglas Luiz on loan if they agree to an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

But the Blues have been long-time admirers of Ederson - and sources in Italy believe Atalanta are now open for business after seeing their serie A title hopes fade in recent weeks.
