Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany led the tributes to club legend Bernard Halford at training after he died on Tuesday at the age of 77.

Halford was Life President and former club secretary of City, and fellow stalwart Kompany was quick to speak to the staff and players about him.

Before training on Wednesday, there was a large gathering on the training pitches, where Kompany spoke passionately before leading a minute's silence.

'Kiddo [Brian Kidd] has asked me to say a few words for Bernard Halford, who passed away sadly yesterday night,' the Belgian defender said.

'I've been at this club for 11 years, Kiddo's been at this club for 10 years, I think some of the things we have to do is bring across to people who have just joined the club, what the history is a little bit of the place.

'Bernard Halford has worked with this club for 47 years, and he's been a part of the history of this club, and he's been a part of everything that's happened before we got to this point.

'A big reason we're here today is because of people like Bernard Halford, and I know that for him it would be the biggest honour to feel that we mentioned him today and that we have a minute of silence for him.

'He passed away and I think we should pay our respects by having a minute of silence.'

A whistle is then sounded, before the silence is immaculately observed for the man known around the club as 'Mr Manchester City'.

Pep Guardiola also led the tributes to the 77-year-old, saying to the club's website: 'It was an honour and a privilege to meet and talk football with him and his knowledge of this football club was amazing.

'He was a great man, but moreover, he was also a great football man with a complete understanding of the game from grass roots level up.

'His whole life was dedicated to the game, but mostly to Manchester City and we were lucky to have him.'
