While sporting director Txiki Begiristain is cautious of Manchester City’s last 16 opponents Schalke, Owen Hargreaves, who played in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich before having spells at City and neighbours Manchester United, is already writing off their chances.
Speaking on BT Sport following today’s Round of 16 draw, Hargreaves warned that Schalke could be on the wrong end of a ‘cricket’ score and will be no match for Pep Guardiola’s side.
“Schalke don’t really have any great athletes like Lyon did, so I just think it’s virtually impossible for this team,” Hargreaves said.
“That could be a cricket score. I fear for Schalke. City will be absolutely delighted with the draw.”
Given that they had the highest probability of drawing Atletico Madrid today in Nyon, City will indeed be delighted with the draw, but will not underestimate their Bundesliga opposition.
City will be away for the first leg on Wednesday 20 February, before hosting their German opponents at the Etihad on Tuesday 12 March.

Yeah the same way Lyon was meant to be too. Life lesson to all football fans, never take what ex players and pundits say seriously. They know nothing about football apart from the complex terms but not the situations in which they apply. City will be out very soon. They probably will win but a cricket score? No, this isn't the bottom table bpl teams. Welcome to the champions league...
