Man United are set for talks with Lisandro Martinez over a new deal next month

Manchester United are expected to open talks over an improved deal for Lisandro Martinez during the club's US tour in July.

Despite initial fears he would be too small to handle the Premier League, the Argentina centre-back has been a big hit at Old Trafford following his move from Ajax.

Martinez, who argues he is at least an inch taller than his registered 5ft 9ins, was in Carrington with Donny van de Beek on Monday as he recovers from a broken metatarsal and United will reward his progress with an appropriate rise.

However, with United's new investment pending and ratification of David de Gea's deal more pressing, next month has been deemed the better time to talk.

United remain in the hunt for a new defender such as Napoli's Kim Min Jae as they look to find a new home for Harry Maguire.

Mail Sport exclusively revealed last week that Maguire is in line for a £10million pay-off from United if he leaves Old Trafford this summer.

Maguire cost £80m from Leicester in 2019 but is now valued at closer to £30m due to his age and the fact he is two-thirds of the way through a six-year contract.

Maguire has another two years left on the £190,000-a-week deal, and it's anticipated that he would earn only half that amount at a new club - leaving United to foot a £10m wage bill to get him off their books.

Maguire has started just 16 out of United's 61 games in all competitions this season with manager Erik ten Hag preferring to play Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw ahead of him in central defence.
