Latest Manchester United news as Ruben Amorim's side can still complete deals despite the Premier League window shutting earlier this month with Andre Onana set to depart
The Premier League transfer window may have slammed shut over a week ago, but Manchester United can still complete a few more deals this month to continue shaking up Ruben Amorim's side after a tough 2024/25 season. Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo all made the move to Old Trafford while Rasmus Hojlund headed for the exit, securing a loan to Napoli with the move reportedly set to become permanent if his new side qualify for the Champions League.
There were also late United departures for Antony, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, who were deemed surplus to requirements at the Theatre of Dreams although more loan deals than initially planned were necessary.
While the wait for a new central midfielder continues - with Carlos Baleba still seemingly in the frame with Conor Gallagher and Adam Wharton both potential options also - United are able to take advantage of other transfer windows that remain open across the continent and beyond.
Turkey's transfer deadline isn't until September 12 and Super Lig clubs are still active in the market. This gives United the chance to offload more players, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Andre Onana could be the most high-profile player to leave, with a move to Trabzonspor on the cards. The Cameroon international is set to agree a season-long loan deal in a bid to secure more first-team football following the arrival of Senne Lammens.
Trabzonspor are expected to foot the bill for Onana's wages - a major boost for United - and the goalkeeper will also enjoy a pay rise thanks to Turkey's 20 per cent tax rate for Super Lig players. Tyrell Malacia could also be jetting off to Turkey.
The Dutch defender's loan move to PSV Eindhoven last season wasn't made permanent and a late transfer move to Spanish side Elche fell through. The 26 year-old has already caught the eye of clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia this summer.
The latter's transfer window doesn't close until September 23. Meanwhile, academy player Sam Mather has also attracted interest from Turkey, as well as Germany and Sweden.
United had hoped to secure a permanent move for the 21 year-old, but a loan deal with an obligation to buy could still be on the cards. Other countries where the transfer window is still open and opportunities could arise include Greece (September 12) and Serbia (September 17).
Former United midfielder Nicky Butt has given his verdict on his former club's summer transfer business, with the 'Class of 92' member explaining where he felt the club went wrong.
"I know Cunha has done really well over the last couple of seasons but I would really like an experienced striker," he said.
"I hope I’m wrong but I really hope they aren’t making the same mistakes with Sesko as they did with Rasmus. A young player coming in with no Premier League experience, it just feels like history repeating itself.
"Honestly, for what it would have cost, I would have gone and brought in someone like Ollie Watkins, someone to help and pull the young strikers out of a bad patch."
"When young players are just coming into the club, when the onus is on them to score goals, if they’re having a few bad games they have to have the safety net of being pulled out of the firing line. Ollie Watkins, or someone like that, would be who I would have been looking to bring in."
