Diogo Dalot could miss the rest of the season with a calf muscle injury, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed.

Dalot has been one of United’s most consistent performers, missing only seven games through injury since the start of 2021. Of the three games the Portugal defender hasn’t started this season, Dalot came off the bench twice and was suspended for the other.

But Amorim revealed that the former FC Porto player is facing a battle to play in United’s remaining five Premier League games and the Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao which starts in Spain on Thursday.

‘Diogo Dalot is out,’ he said. ‘We don’t know how long he’s going to be out. But he’s out for these next games.’

Asked if the 26-year-old could be out for the season, Amorim added: ‘There is that possibility but I don’t know. We will check week by week because he works really hard. He can recover quite well, we’ll see.

‘He has something in his muscle, his calf. He had a sequence of games, he played all the time. We try to manage but the players play a lot of minutes and Dalot felt something.’

Amorim indicated the Amad Diallo and Matthijs de Ligt are closer to fitness, although Ayden Heaven is still not ready after suffering a setback in his recovery from an ankle injury.

He added: ‘Amad is near, Mattha is near but the rest is at the same pace. Ayden is not ready, so that’s it.’
