Manchester United fans have hailed loan striker Wout Weghorst as the new Marouane Fellaini following his No 10 role against Barcelona.

Erik ten Hag's side drew 2-2 with the Catalan giants at the Nou Camp, but the Dutchman made some tactical decisions before kick-off.

Weghorst, who was brought in to fill United's No 9 void, was deployed behind Marcus Rashford with Bruno Fernandes to the right and Jadon Sancho to the left.

The No 10 role is not one Weghorst is massively familiar with, having always been a striker at AZ Alkmaar, Wolfsburg, Burnley and Besiktas.

Although Weghorst had a relatively quiet game, it allowed Rashford to exploit the high Barcelona line with his speed.

Fans on social media were quick to liken the Dutch striker to Fellaini - who played in several positions during his seven years at Old Trafford.

The Belgian became known for popping up with important goals as he arrived into the box late from deep, winning the ball in the air and heading home.

One fan who saw the resemblance said: 'Weghorst playing the Fellaini role, got a lot of time for that.'

Meanwhile, a second added: 'Fellaini walked so that Weghorst could run.'

A third said: 'Wout Weghorst playing the Marouane Fellaini role as he did at the weekend. David Moyes was ahead of his time.'

And a fourth added: 'I love seeing Wout Weghorst play as a 10, it really gives me Marouane Fellaini vibes'.

It remains to be seen whether Ten Hag will use Weghorst as a No 10 in the future, but he was happy with how it went against Barcelona.

'It's not only about Wout but he did well in the position. I know he can be, it gives us a lot of variation,' he said.

'I want Jadon and Bruno coming in the half spaces, get them on the ball and makes runs from deep, with the full-backs joining in we had a lot of variation and a lot of opportunities.'

Weghorst spurned a glorious chance to put United 1-0 up in the first-half after he was denied by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The Dutchman, who is at United until the end of the season, will hope he can make a difference when Barcelona come to Old Trafford for the second leg next Thursday.
