Sir Alex Ferguson's former right-hand man has warned Manchester United not to sign Neymar this summer, declaring the Brazilian as a 'prima donna'.
On Wednesday, Erik ten Hag refused to rule out the possibility of the Red Devils signing the 31-year-old forward from PSG, after a flurry of speculation that he will leave the Parisians six years after a £193m world record move from Barcelona.
But while some believe the Brazilian would be a great fit for the Old Trafford side as they look to knock Manchester City off their perch at the top of the Premier League, a former senior figure from the club disagrees.
Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen, who worked under Sir Alex Ferguson for six years between 2007 and 2013, has issued a stark warning about the propsect of Neymar in a red shirt.
Meulensteen told talkSPORT: 'It’s probably rumours and speculation, everybody keeps tight-lipped about it.
'I have my reservations about it because he’s obviously a high-calibre player but he’s also a prima donna.'
Neymar has had long stints in LaLiga with Barcelona, and Ligue 1 with PSG, but Meulensteen warns that the English top flight is very different - especially as he will be directly competing for a place with England star Marcus Rashford.
'He’s never played in the Premier League. Playing in Spain and France is completely different,' Meulensteen said. 'Also his best position is playing on the left wing and you’re gonna go with Rashford.'
The Dutchman, who is currently assistant of the Australian national team, believes 'you don't know what you're going to get on the pitch' from the Brazilian, but accepts that the 'commercial return' will please the owners.
Meulensteen concluded: 'But you need to look into it and that’s why I think Erik keeps his cards close to his chest on this one.'
Manchester United secured Champions League football for the 2023-24 season after beating Chelsea 4-1 on Thursday night.
They have two games remaining this season. If they win Sunday's home game against another west London side - this time Fulham - then they will finish third in the league ahead of Newcastle.
The Red Devils then take their own trip to the capital six days later for the all-Manchester FA Cup final at Wembley.
