Manchester United Football Club said on Sunday star striker Mason Greenwood "will not return to training or play matches until further notice," after allegations of domestic violence emerged against the 20-year-old England player.
A spokesperson for the club told CNN earlier on Sunday that the club was aware of "images and allegations circulating on social media" regarding the footballer, adding it would "not make any further comment until the facts have been established."
"Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind," the statement added.
Greater Manchester Police said "a man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault" on Sunday, adding that the suspect "remained in custody for questioning" and that "enquiries were ongoing." The police force said it was made aware earlier in the day of "online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence."
A statement sent to CNN earlier on Sunday read that "enquiries were ongoing to establish the full circumstances."
Police also said it would not confirm any names of victims or potential offenders.
This comes after a series of photos and audio recordings allegedly posted online by Greenwood's girlfriend, social media influencer Harriet Robson. In the posts, Robson accuses Greenwood of domestic violence, showing photos of what appears to be her lip bleeding and bruises to her body. Robson had taken down the posts on Sunday.
Mason Greenwood has not yet responded to the allegations.

so unfortunate.... Greenwood did wrong by beating or forcing the girl for sex. But this is all set up. That girl planned set that trap for him and he entered perfectly. because I have not seen someone who is being beaten and forced for sex and she had time to open her phone and put it on record, not possible. and it's also not possible that someone who is forcing you and beating you just sit and waited for you to put your phone on record so that you guys can continue the forcing.... The only possibility there is that, that girl already knew greenwood will come for sex and placed that phone on record before that event , without greenwood knowing. And she refused to have sex, knowing greenwood will beat her out of anger. So, you see how the whole goes. and I don't believe that an 18 old girl will come out with such destructive plan, unless she has accomplices. Think about it.
