Manchester United have triggered the one-year option in Nemanja Matic's contract and are in discussions about a new deal.

Matic, 31, had entered the last four months of his contract but United have tied him to the club until 2021.

Matic, rested for the Europa League thrashing of LASK Linz last week, was open to leaving in the winter transfer window, but injuries to fellow midfielders Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay let the Serbian back into the fold and he scored the League Cup semi-final second leg winner at Manchester City.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed earlier this month the club was looking to sort a new contract for Matic. "We have agreed with him so he will stay, 100 per cent."

Matic has started nine of the last 10 Premier League games and only missed the goalless draw with Wolves due to a one-match suspension.
