The Premier League declared fans' chanting about historic tragedies a “priority and matter of urgency” following Leeds' game with Manchester United.
Both sets of fans were heard taunting the other, with allegations made over chants relating to the Istanbul and Munich tragedies that the respective clubs have suffered. Other chants of an unsavoury nature were also heard during Sunday's game.
A Premier League statement condemned the chants and vowed to clamp down on the worrying trend.
It read: “The Premier League condemns the chanting heard during today's match between Leeds United and Manchester United.
“The league is treating the issue of tragedy chanting as a priority and as a matter of urgency.”
Leeds and Man United released a joint statement describing the scenes as “completely unacceptable”.
The statement read: “Both clubs strongly condemn chanting from both sets of fans regarding historic tragedies at today's game.
“Such behaviour is completely unacceptable and we will continue to work together with our respective fan groups and the Premier League and other authorities on eradicating it from football.”
