Manchester United are closing in on a deadline-beating loan deal for the former Watford forward Odion Ighalo after agreeing the switch with Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

The Mail Online report that the 30-year-old has just under two years left on his staggering £300,000-a-week deal at Shanghai, with United agreeing to pay his £100,000-a-week for the remainder of this season.

There will also be a £4million loan fee, with both clubs set to review the situation at the end of the season as they look towards a permanent deal.

One man who is less than impressed with the move is the former Sheffield United, Crystal Palace and Queens Park Rangers manager Neil Warnock, who says he once tried and failed to sign Ighalo for his most recent club Cardiff City.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Warnock said: "His salary was over six figures a week, £100,000, something like that. His agent tells you one thing, then the other.

" Manchester United won't have that problem with the terms. I'm not sure he's the right player for United. He's not consistent and isn't the right type of player.

"They want young players. Why didn't they go for Danny Ings? He's someone similar to Marcus Rashford. It's desperation."
