Marcus Rashford's season appears to be over with Manchester United and Aston Villa now requiring new discussions after the loan star picked up a hamstring injury last week

Manchester United and Aston Villa are in talks over ending Marcus Rashford's loan with Midlands club. The England international missed Villa's FA Cup semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace and is set to be out for weeks.

The 27-year-old suffered a hamstring injury in the run up to that game that looks set to have ended his season. There are four Premier League matches remaining as Unai Emery's side attempt to claim Champions League football but with the final game of the season against United, Rashford is already ruled ineligible for the clash.

"He's injured," said Emery last week. "He got injured this week and [Friday] we did a test. It's his hamstring. We are going to try to test him each match but he's injured and probably some weeks he won't be available."

And now there will likely be talks over where the United academy product spends the remainder of the season, per reports. Rashford has accepted he will not play for the Red Devils again but could soon find himself back with the 13-time Premier League champions.

The striker is in a unique position of his time at Old Trafford looking to be at an end, despite being under contract until 2028. The Villans meanwhile have a £40million option to turn his loan into a permanent deal, but it has been claimed Rashford wants to a club that offers Champions League football, with Spain of interest.

Rashford started nine of Villa's last 12 games, including both legs of the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain, before picking up his injury. The striker found the net twice and provided three assists in the Premier League under Emery having been cast aside by Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese coach has however, already confirmed that Rashford would return to the club before his future is decided in the summer. "All the players on loan will return and then the club will decide what to do at the end of the season," he said.

"When you put a player on loan the best thing is for them to perform. All these [loan] players have talent and they have to put that on the team."

For now, Rashford's ambitions are centred around getting fit in time for the summer. Having made Thomas Tuchel's first England squad after moving on loan to Aston Villa, the forward wants to make himself available for the German coach once again.

Rashford started both of England's World Cup qualifying wins over Albania and Latvia. Tuchel’s side next face Andorra in another qualifier on June 7 before hosting Senegal in a friendly three days later.

The forward's form at Manchester United, amid the club's struggles, saw him miss out on Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad.
