Manchester United are reportedly close to appointing former Toronto FC coach Ewan Sharp to become interim manager Ralf Rangnick's assistant and analyst.

Rangnick first worked with Sharp when the latter was a performance analyst at New York Red Bulls, but they later renewed their relationship at Lokomotiv Moscow.

Now Sky Sports News are reporting that Sharp is set to join from the Russian club - where Rangnick was prior to his appointment at Old Trafford - and will join Chris Armas as one of Rangnick's backroom staff in the dug-out.

Sharp was previously part of Armas' coaching staff at Toronto earlier this year before the head coach was given the boot in July.

The appointment would give a boost to the United coaching staff following the departures of Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna recently.

Carrick opted to move on after a brief period in caretaker charge following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking.

McKenna, meanwhile, left to become manager at League One Ipswich Town last week.

Rangnick also recently insisted that Mike Phelan - who was also an assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson - will stay part of the coaching set-up.

United have not played since beating Norwich on December 11, with two games postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak at the club.

They are next due to face Newcastle United on December 27, before playing Burnley three days later.
