Man Utd 'considered Camavinga' 2 years ago but made different £8.5m decision

Manchester United considered signing Eduardo Camavinga two years ago but made a move for a different player instead.

The Red Devils are looking to wrap up their transfer business as soon as possible this summer with Jadon Sancho already agreed.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to reinforce his midfield and sees Camavinga as the ideal solution.

The Rennes ace has had a remarkable rise to stardom in the last two years and has been chased by the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

And with one year left on the 18-year-old's contract, the Ligue 1 outfit could be forced to sell this summer to avoid losing him for nothing.

But there might be some in the Old Trafford boardroom scorning their decision to go a different direction two years ago.

Back in 2019, United were given the opportunity to sign Camavinga when he was just coming up through the ranks at Roazhon Park.

After making a handful of appearances for the first-team, scouts from across the globe started to take notice.

Among them were the Red Devils, who had extensively grown their network to eye the best talents.

According to The Athletic, United could have signed Camavinga two years ago but instead opted to sign Hannibal Mejbri from Monaco for £8.5m.

The midfielder has wowed coaches since signing for the club but has made just one first-team appearance.

However, there is real hope that Hannibal could be a superstar in the future, yet there could be some regrets over their pursuit of Camavinga.

Particularly as Europe's biggest clubs are taking a closer look at the teenager, who has been likened to Paul Pogba and Zinedine Zidane.

United would have hoped for a calmer transfer race after already splashing out over £70m on Sancho.

The England international is a marquee signing at Old Trafford, who were desperate to bring in the forward last summer.

But Rennes will be hoping to raise the price of Camavinga as high as possible if the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea get involved.

Meanwhile, other targets that have been tipped to sign are Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham if a deal cannot be agreed with the France international.

However, neither would be cheap with West Ham asking for £100m for their midfielder alone.
