Manchester United fans taunted Lionel Messi by chanting Cristiano Ronaldo's name on Wednesday night.
The Barcelona star was struck in the face by Chris Smalling's flailing arm and suffered a nose bleed as a result during Ernesto Valverde's side's 1-0 win at Old Trafford.
As Messi walked off the pitch, United supporters chanted the Barcelona star's rival and former Red Devils player's name.
Luke Shaw had already diverted a Luis Suarez header into his own net when Messi was receiving treatment.
The Argentina international returned to action moments later and helped his side see out the win.
The Red Devils did not manage a shot on target, with Diogo Dalot having the best chance to score for United but miscued his header wide of the goal.
The second leg will be on April 16 where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side know they will have to score to cancel out Barcelona's away goal.
The winner of this quarter-final will face the winner of Liverpool against Porto, where the Reds have a 2-0 advantage going into the second leg.

We Barcelona fans really need to access things holistically. How many of us would have supported Barca when we started doing so if this is the way we used to play then? we weren't winning trophies when I started supporting FCB but we had a good playing pattern and a project in LA Masia that I believed in with Guardiola later perfecting the previous and making the best use of the later and bringing us a rain of trophies, fame and money in the process. Our identity has been eroded since EV came in, we had a sort of unbeaten run in La-Liga when Roma embarrassed us last season, some of us saw it coming but most fans were blinded by the League results we were getting even when it was obvious we were struggling with a stupid mindset of conservative/defensive game. Unfortunately, nothing has changed but we still can't see, we no longer see Andre Gomes play ahead of Dembele because the board loaned him to Everton not because the coach learnt from the Roma disaster. We still have some players who will play for 90mins even if they are playing terribly while some won't play 90mins even if they were the best on the field. Having a run of good games for those out of favour with the coach doesn't guarantee them of a consistent play time. Analysing yesterday's game against Man U, the fans had to keep a continuous pressure on the board and coach for Semedo to start as 2 which we all saw as a good choice because of ManU pacy players especially from the wings but because the coach was hell bent on using Roberto, he introduced him as sub in the midfield when he had no offence whatsoever against Semedo in the match. Some people look at some stats and say all sort to justify our mediocrity, things like ManU didn't have a short on target when we all know we played a ManU with a terrible squad and just trying to get back on its feet. Others say this is our first away win at the quarter final stage in 4years forgetting the fact that Barcelona have the highest wage bill and how many players did we sign in the 4years? We have the highest number of midfield players and attackers but we can't remember the last time we had a comfortable win over any club. Some players like Sergio Busquet, Rakitic, Suarez etc have been having a terrible run of form but instead of the coach making changes along this line, he opted for his usual substitution. Left for me, I would have subbed off Busquet for Vidal, Rakitic for Malcolm while Coutinho drops to the middle. Malcolm would have been able to increase the pace of play upfront while also reducing the pressure on Messi. On a normal day with a full squad, I will play Dembele on the left flank while Messi starts on the right flank, Coutinho in the middle and Suarez as 9 and if Suarez is having a bad game, I will sub him off for Malcolm with Messi or Malcolm playing as false 9 and the other on the flank. I have said it times without number that Coutinho is a midfielder and not a winger, he is a replacement for Iniesta and not for Neymar, he isn't built for speed and stamina and we never signed him for that. Lastly, a law in physics says 'to every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction', when ManU signed Mourinho, I told some ManU fans that it was a panic buy. He got them Europa trophy but did a great damage to the club philosophy and players mentality. At the end of the day, it's going to take a longer time to turn ManU back to Fergie days. ManU used to be a club with some fear factor but these days, Wolves and other smaller clubs don't fear ManU and that's exactly what EV is doing to us, our fear factor is getting eroded. We had higher ball possession but we played aimlessly. We are lucky to still be in the competition, if we had faced a more offensive side in the round of 16, we would have been eliminated. Are we prepared to face Liverpool the way we are? they have a good keeper, good defense and very fast/strong players. We really need a better coach. A.K.O Feyi

This is indeed bad gesture from the fans we have to understand that both are humans they r not God who is perfect ......... If you love one doesn't mean you have to disrespect the other.... Love one respect both ... #Respect

When Real Madrid lost their 3rd consecutive game, every Real Madrid in the stadium was chanting Ronaldo. When Barcelona defeated Real Madrid who didn't have CR7, their fans were chanting Ronaldo. Now its Manchester United. The guy is still a legend

Messi is always mocked with Ronaldo chants at Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United, Ronaldo's old clubs, never at Madrid tho, they can't risk their heartbeats for a simple chant! But when Ronaldo was mocked with Messi chants against clubs and countries Messi never associated with, you realize who the majority think the GOAT is... Ronaldo fans should be termed a minority ethnic group
