Ruud van Nistelrooy has reportedly agreed to become the next manager of PSV Eindhoven following successful talks with incoming general manager Marcel Brands.
Van Nistelrooy, 45, is currently in charge of Jong PSV, the club's reserve side, after coaching their Under-18 team up until last summer.
While he has previously worked as an assistant for Netherlands' national side, the Manchester United legend is yet to take on a senior managerial role despite hanging up his boots almost 10 years ago.
But according to De Telegraaf, Van Nistelrooy is poised to take the reins with PSV after holding talks over their manager's position this week.
With current boss Roger Schmidt set to leave at the end of the season, the Dutch club are on the hunt for his successor and have pinpointed their ex-striker as the ideal candidate.
Brands, who is moving into a general manager role at Philips Stadium after departing Everton last year, has made a breakthrough in discussions with Van Nistelrooy and convinced him to take the job.
PSV currently sit second in the Eredivisie table, just two points behind leaders Ajax.
Van Nistelrooy could find himself taking charge of the Dutch champions next season, with Schmidt in with a chance of bidding farewell to the club on a high.
Schmidt, who has spent the last two years at PSV, announced he will be leaving in the summer after failing to agree a new contract.
However, Van Nistelrooy initially ruled himself out of the running to replace him earlier this month.
'I can be clear about that now. I will not go through to the first-team of PSV,' van Nistelrooy told ESPN.
'I don't think I'm ready for that yet. I think we should continue to follow the trajectory that we have agreed upon. The ambition and the drive are there, but it is too early now.'
