Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo has been heavily linked with a move away ahead of the January transfer window

Manchester United have been linked with several deals ahead of the January transfer window. The Red Devils will be forming plans to strengthen their squad as Ruben Amorim’s team push for a Champions League spot.

The club can assert their top four ambitions with a home win over Bournemouth on Monday night. United have lost just one of their last nine games, following their 4-1 victory at Wolves.

United’s improving form makes the club an increasingly attractive destination for potential signings next month but Kobbie Mainoo is one player who has been touted with a move away from Old Trafford. Here, Mirror Football looks at some of the biggest headlines surrounding United.

Napoli director addresses Kobbie Mainoo rumours

Kobbie Mainoo has been consistently linked with joining Napoli due to his limited game time at United. The 20-year-old midfielder saw a loan request rejected in the summer but has yet to start a league game this term.

Napoli have Mainoo’s former teammate Scott McTominay and current United loanee Rasmus Hojlund within their squad. The Italian club’s sporting director Giovanni Manna has responded to speculation that Mainoo could be the next player to join from Old Trafford as Napoli battle an injury crisis.

“He is a player who has been linked to Napoli since August, also for his age, his potential, and the transfer opportunity,” Manna told Sky Sport Italia. “This team is doing well, it is consolidated.

“We have some important absences right now, but sooner or later the lads will return, strong and determined. We have to make the right evaluations, so we’ll see how things progress along the way.”

Midfielders Billy Gilmour, Stanislav Lobotka, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Kevin De Bruyne were all sidelined for Napoli’s Champions League clash with Benfica on Wednesday. Antonio Conte's side suffered a 2-0 defeat, with McTominay being criticised for his performance.

Man Utd earn windfall

Manchester United have announced a £13.3million operating profit in their first quarter financial results. Last year, the club had built up a £6.9m loss over the same period.

The financial change is due to reduced costs, following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s financial review after purchasing a minority stake in 2024. United were found to have the highest number of employees across the Premier League, which led to mass redundancies to bring costs down. The latest figures show United’s total revenue was £140.3m, despite their absence from European competition this season.

United CEO Omar Berrada said: “These robust financial results reflect the resilience of Manchester United as we make strong progress in our transformation of the club.

"The difficult decisions we have made in the past year have resulted in a sustainably lower cost base and a more streamlined, effective organisation equipped to drive the club towards improved sporting and commercial performance over the long-term.

"That has helped us to invest in our men’s and women’s teams, sitting in sixth and third places in the Premier League and women’s Super League respectively.”
