MANCHESTER UNITED are at rock bottom after the biggest cup upset saw the club crash out of the Carabao Cup second-round to an electric Grimsby Town on penalties.
Ruben Amorim’s sorry lot scored twice in the last 15 minutes to crawl back from 2-0 down against a League Two outfit 56 places below them in the table.
Harry Maguire’s 89th minute header sent the tie to penalties, which was embarrassing enough before their 12-11 defeat in the shootout after a merry-go-round of spot-kicks.
The home fans sang “you’re getting sacked in the morning” to Amorim throughout and you can’t help but wonder if they’re right.
United have just lost to a four-tier side for the first time ever.
Two Andre Onana errors sent the Mariners into dreamland but the entire United squad were brutally outplayed here in front of a sellout crowd of 9,000 fans at Blundell Park.
What a night for Charles Vernam who slotted home after a defensive mix-up and former United youth star Tyrell Warren who doubled the lead inside half an hour.
David Artell’s side had a third goal ruled out for offside, before half-time sub Bryan Mbeumo - and final sudden death penalty fluffer - got one back with 15 minutes on the clock before Maguire’s equaliser.
Here’s how SunSport’s Katherine Walsh rated the Man Utd players as a waterfall of rain and lightning came down by the seaside in North Lincolnshire.
Andre Onana - 0
A nervous wreck from the ever-eternal howler stopper. United need a new goalkeeper tomorrow morning. Maybe Grimsby’s No.1 Christy Pym?
Onana was just as shaky as Altay Bayindir has been on corners and crosses in the two opening games - and it was a well-worked game plan for the home side.
On his first start in months, the former Champions League FINALIST should have saved the first, and completely missed the ball for the second. Truly awful.
The home support jeered every time he was asked to kick the ball. And rightly so as the Cameroonian kicked the ball straight out of play twice in the first half.
He saved Clarke Oduor’s penalty - the third in the shootout. But was poor with almost every spot-kick thereafter, especially for 18-year-old Harry Brown’s.
Tyler Fredricson - 3
Was left vulnerable and exposed by his seniors. Was caught out almost every time and spent a lot of time running towards his own goal after an incredible Grimsby start.
Was found out by League Two star Vernam on several occasions. Poor night for the teenager but this mess is bigger than him.
Harry Maguire - 4
Got the rescuing equaliser with a strong back post header in the 88th minute, but this was a shambles.
Looked shell shocked throughout. No leadership in sight either and got an earful or two from Amad for poor passing in the middle of the pitch after 2-0.
The England centre-back was given the run around by Cameron Gardner to concede another corner in the second half.
Ayden Heaven - 3
Poor half clearance during a bright Grimsby start in the five minute. Mainoo got him out of jail.
The Arsenal youth star isn’t ready to start in the Prem just yet, the 18-year-old was caught out and sloppy on several occasions.
But he did deny Grimsby a killer third when he deflected Darragh Burns’ shot behind Onana's goal.
Diogo Dalot - 2
How is Dalot in Amorim’s six-man leadership group? A terrible pass left United in trouble inside eight minutes. And it was business as usual from then on.
Was at fault for miss controlling the ball - just like he did three days ago against Fulham - and clashed into Ugarte before Grimsby’s well deserved opener.
With Dalot so high up the pitch, Grimsby had the freedom of Manchester down his right hand side.
He also bizarrely headed a few off for corners when he could have let it run.
Patrick Dorgu - 3
A blistering Grimsby cross came down his side in the first minute. Nothing changed from then on.
Beaten several times down his flank and blasted crosses into the stand behind the goal several times. Just awful.
Grimsby’s fullback Jayden Sweeney had a much better game.
Amad Diallo - 4
Was treated to a tough classic English game of football. Tackles and roughhousery galore.
Clearly United’s biggest threat with The Mariners smashing into him every chance they got.
And Cameron McJannet left the glove on the Ivorian winger on several occasions. Looked devastated.
Manuel Ugarte - 3
Was part of the midfield calamity with Dalot for Grimsby’s opener.
Gifting fouls away left right and centre too when he must be aware that his defence and Onana can’t deal set pieces.
Kobbie Mainoo - 4
You’ve got to feel for Mainoo - this was his chance to impress Amorim and turn his chances around on his first start and chance for minutes of the season.
But there’s no wonder the England star wants out. This club is soul-destroying and completely broken.
Some loose passes in the second half didn’t help his cause. And was kept on for the full 90 to extend his misery.
Matheus Cunha - 4
The Brazilian could have linked up with Sesko better. Had two shots brilliantly blocked by Grimsby’s staunch back-line in the first 15 minutes.
Great inswinging free-kicks into the box, it’s a shame no one was able to help him out.
The £63million signing from Wolves missed the penalty to win it in the first round of penalties.
Benjamin Sesko - 3
I know the talk has been that the Slovenian ace has not been up to pace for the Prem, but he didn’t give a good account of himself against English rough-houses here.
He towered over the League Two side's back-line but United hardly made use of it.
Beat his man on occasion but his shooting was way off it. Twice easily blocked and another weak one for the keeper to collect.
Can’t remember Sesko touch the ball in the second half before he failed to win it for his side when his shot was sent into row Z from two yards at the death.
The £74 million striker was ninth in the shootout. Bizarre.
SUBS
Matthijs De Ligt (for Fredricson at HT) - 4
Forced to take matters into his own hands when his shot went wide early in the second half. The Dutch international also had a header blocked in the 85th minute.
Mason Mount (on for Heaven in 64th minute) - 5
Poor corners couldn’t threaten Grimsby in his first 20 minutes on the pitch.
But his set piece was headed in by Maguire at the death. Scored his penalty which was United’s third.
Bruno Fernandes (for Ugarte at HT) - 5
Came on to save the day and couldn’t. Looked as frustrated as ever as he couldn’t get hold of the ball.
Had a pop at goal from 25 yards with his strikers so inept but was kept out by Pym.
After ballooning his penalty at Craven Cottage, he scored the first spot-kick here. But the Portugal star couldn’t watch from then on thereafter.
Joshua Zirkzee (for Amad in 82nd minute) - N/A
Booked immediately after coming on for a nasty challenge on Darragh Burns, who had a tremendous evening.
Scored his penalty.
Bryan Mbeumo (on at HT for Dorgu) - 6
Gave United hope with a smart finish in the 75th minute.
Scored a cracking penalty in the shootout. But tragically smacked his second off the post after the shootout when round again.
He looked devastated as Fernandes guided him through Grimsby’s pitch invasion.

Every keeper can make such mistakes he corrected his mistakes by setting United up saving that penalty what happened they shouldn’t be blaming Onana in this level of defense United have got no keeper can be on that post comfortably even the prime Peter zceck can’t

Onana always takes the blame when Man Utd loses but why don’t they also score more goals to counter what they call Onana’s blunders. Why are the strikers not called out for not scoring?

Sorry man u fans .This is frustrated week for you. but that is football, stop throwing Arsenals fans because we could be frustrated, but never like this. give time to coaches to work on your club, not 1,2,or 3 seasons. be relaxed, for you can't win matches with magic, that is why we gave Arteta time to build a competitive team and today we are proud of the process, even if we don't win yet a trophy, but we know it will come soon

They would never ever pass Wanbisaka. Big mistake letting go of a beautiful talent. And still more big mistakes are happening with our academy youth talent being sold under everyone's nose and nothing can be done until we get relegated.

The manager already created a toxic atmospherr by sidelining our academy players.. MAINOO HEAVEN DORGU Garnacho is leaving and Rash left. Antony Malaccia ONANA. Why can't he treat them well than have a go at him.telling our best academy players to go find a club is 🤮. Why not integrate all these players he wants into the team and make it competitive And it make me 😂 to see Diallo start at the place where Mbeumo must play In as much Diallo is good he's not as good as Mbeumo The manager is Toxic

I didn't watch the game, am not a Man U fan but clearly you can see it's not just the wrong ideas/tactics of the coach letting Man U down, it's the players too. A good example is the EPL game vs Fulham, had Bruno scored his penalty Man U would be up the table. So for me the players are letting the coach down. No matter how good a coach is, he needs players that play for him. At the moment, and for a long time now, Man U players haven't been playing for their coaches. Still I would say, don't sack Amorin yet. Sometimes good things come from disappointment.
It is not guaranteed to score every penalty 🙄 .. so many teams missed penalties and still win the game..

The question is does United even have the money to sack Amorim after spending big and already out of 1 of the possible 3 competition they are in.
