Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has sent his personal scout to watch Fiorentina and Italy winger Federico Chiesa.

Sportsmail understands that Simon Wells was in attendance during Fiorentina’s 1-1 draw at home to AC Milan last weekend.

Wells reports directly to Solskjaer and it was Chiesa who he was detailed to check on ahead of a proposed summer move.

The 22-year-old is valued at around £60million having already won 17 caps for his country. He has also appeared 121 times in Serie A for La Viola, scoring 21 goals.

Chiesa - the son of former Italy striker Enrico - is rated as one of Italy’s best prospects and will be in their squad for this summer’s European Championships.

United will have noted that the player has already taken English lessons and their interest has piqued in recent weeks after Chiesa scored four times in five matches, prompting Wells’ trip to Florence.

Chiesa can play across the front three but prefers to operate wide on the right, a position which Solskjaer is likely to strengthen.

He is under contract until 2022 and has also attracted interest from Juventus. Fiorentina are said to be readying an offer to extend his deal until 2024.
