The match between Manchester United Women and Charlton Women has been abandoned 'due to medical reasons'.

Charlton defender Charlotte Kerr went down as Man United scored a goal in the 11th minute, and received lengthy treatment on the pitch.

The players were asked to go back to the changing rooms, and later the referee decided to abandon the match after Kerr was taken to hospital.

It appears that after Charlie Devlin scored Manchester United's opening goal, Kerr went down after a collision with her keeper.

According to Manchester Evening News, Kerr went down for 30 minutes while she received treatment on the pitch from the medical teams of both clubs. The players were ordered back to their changing rooms while the ambulance came to take her to hospital.

It is claimed that Kerr has 'quite a severe rib injury but nothing else. She was having trouble breathing so was placed on oxygen by United's medical staff.'

'The referee has decided to abandon the match due to medical reasons,' read a tweet from the Charlton Athletic Women account. 'We will bring you details on rearranged details and ticket news in due course. Thanks for your support.'

A subsequent tweet says that news of Charlotte Kerr's condition will be shared as soon as they have more information.

The Manchester United Women's account tweeted their support for Kerr, saying 'everyone at #MUWomen wishes her a speedy recovery.' Head coach Casey Stoney shared the same sentiments.

There has been controversy in the aftermath of the incident over why there was not an ambulance already at the ground in case of emergency.

Unlike in the Premier League, it's not obligatory to have an ambulance on site for games such as this one, and Kerr was forced to wait for some time before one arrived.
