Jose Mourinho will receive a huge £12million pay-off from Manchester United if they sack him this season.

The Portuguese is one of the favourites among the bookmakers to be given the boot first following a miserable pre-season and disappointing transfer window.

And according to The Sun, Mourinho can expect to be paid a full year of his salary if executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward decides he is no longer the man for the job.

The 55-year-old signed a new contract in January, tying him to the club until the summer of 2020 with an option to extend his stay further.

But the new report claims a clause was inserted into Mourinho's deal which would ensure he does not receive the the full two years of his mega wages.

A Manchester United source told The Sun: 'It became quite a protracted affair when it came to discussing a final settlement with Louis van Gaal.

'The club wanted to avoid a repeat of that again in the future - especially as Jose earns far in excess of what he did.

'Van Gaal held out for every penny but even United have to draw the financial line somewhere with Jose.'
