Manchester United have travelled to Italy to face Como but severe weather conditions in the area have led to fears that the Champions League clash could be postponed

Manchester United's Champions League clash with Como is in danger of being postponed as major rainfall hits the Italian region.

The Red Devils have travelled to mainland Europe to play in their third Champions League game of the season, but there's now serious doubt over whether it will go ahead.

Lombardy, the region in which Como is located, has been issued with an orange warning for rain. This signals a severe warning of dangerous weather and there is a call for vigilance. As expected that rain arrived on Tuesday and has continued into Wednesday morning, meaning the pitch has been hammered by rainfall and the condition are treacherous.

PA reported that that 64mm worth of rain is forecast before kick-off at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, with only one of their four stands under cover - leaving fans preparing for a water evening. Despite the added prospect of lightning, Como are confident of the pitch holding up and avoiding postponement.

United have won and lost in their opening two Champions League encounters and under pressure boss Michael Carrick brushed off any concerns over the weather in the lead up to the game. "No, nothing immediate from me, we're used to the rain," he said. "We'll make the most of it!"

The Manchester outfit have only won two games all season and come up against a Como side who are on the rise and led by former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas. They boast former United man Willy Kambwala in their squad.

Carrick's side trained on Tuesday without six players, which could major impact on selection. Ayden Heaven, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu were the absentees.

The United boss also maintained that, despite presiding over the worst start to a campaign in 40 years, he feels the confidence from those above him.

"I don't need any reassurance. It's pretty clear. I know the role, I know my responsibilities, I don't need anyone to tell me when it's going well or when it needs to be better," he said.

"I know the realities and have no problem with that. I know we got to win football games for everything to flow and fit into place. I feel backed, yeah, why wouldn't I? I have a really good relationship with everyone at the football club. There are no issues on that side."
