Manchester United's participation in the Europa League group stages is worth around five times less than an appearance in the Champions League.
While the club would pick up €15.25million (£13.2million) just for showing up to the Champions League group stages, Manchester United will pick up just €2.92million for its Europa League group stage participation.
A Champions League group stage win is worth an additional €2.7million and a draw €900,000; compared to €570,000 and €190,000 in the Europa League.
Match day three sees Manchester United travel to Serbia to face off against group leaders Partizan Belgrade. The side, second in Group L, have been in spluttering form so far, needing a late goal at Old Trafford to see off Kazakhstani side FC Astana and being held to a goalless draw by Eredivise team AZ Alkmaar in The Hague.
Manchester United will earn €1million if they can win the group and €500,000 as runners-up; this equivalent prize money is not on offer in the Champions League, nor, naturally, the prize for reaching the Round of 32, which is €500,000 in the Europa League.
Champions Leagues sides that make the Round of 16 bank an additional €9.5million, compared to just €1.1million in the Europa League.
"Our combined Broadcasting and Matchday revenue from participation in European competitions was £93.1 million" last season, when Manchester United were knocked out at the quarter finals stage by Barcelona.
Meanwhile, prior to the latest three-year broadcasting arrangement in the Champions League kicking in 2018/19, the side earned £45.9 million in 2017/18 after losing to Sevilla in the Round of 16.
In winning the Europa League in 2017, Manchester United earned £48.5 million.
