Manchester City's 21-year-old right-back Issa Kabore is joining Ligue 1 side Marseille on a season loan.

The Burkina Faso international, who was a target for Southampton, could make the move permanent next summer for £17m.

Having joined the reigning Premier League champions in 2020 from Belgian outfit KV Mechelen Kabore failed to play a single game for Pep Guardiola's side.

The defender was sent back to the Belgian side immediately on loan until the summer of 2021, when he joined French club ESTAC Troyes.

In 31 Ligue 1 games for ESTAC he provided two assists and was sent off twice in a largely unsuccessful spell as Troyes avoided relegation to finish 15th in the league.

The 21-year-old will become the 13th player to sign for Marseille, joining the likes of Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez, ex-Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi and Turkish winger Cengiz Under, who joins from Jose Mourinho's Roma.

Les Olympiens have also outlined Manchester United's Ivorian centre-back Eric Bailly as a further defensive recruit.

Enquiries from West Ham, Fulham, Sevilla, AC Milan and Roma had focused on loan deals but Marseille are willing to sign the 28-year-old on a permanent deal.

The 28-year-old, who joined Manchester United for £30million in 2016, is seen as the ideal addition for the Ligue 1 sides as they look to strengthen their back line this summer.
