According to the Manchester Evening News, Matheus Cunha has been struggling to find his best position. He was signed under Amorim to fill one of the two number 10 roles in a 3-4-2-1 formation, but now that Carrick has switched to a back four, he no longer has a natural position.
Last season, he played mostly on the left wing, and at the start of this season, he featured as a false nine. In the second half against Roma, he alternated between the two positions, and Carrick hinted that giving the 27-year-old more freedom could help him consistently unlock his potential.
"I think Matheus's strength is that he can play in different positions in the attack," he said. "He has played on the left for us, and he performed very well there last season. This season he has sometimes played in the middle, and on Tuesday he was between the left and the middle."
"I think a bit more freedom and fluidity suits him, but he can play both. Of course he can."
