Manchester United's transfer dealings have often been criticised. Current boss Erik ten Hag has not shied away from the fact he is yet to fully rubber stamp his own mark on this United team, with just five permanent signings arriving since he was appointed.
The Reds' poor recruitment is no secret. But with a new era now in full swing, it remains to be seen whether Ten Hag will be given the money to sign more new players in January.
But how successful have United's past January signings been? Here at MEN Sport, we've taken a look at some of the more memorable mid-season signings made by the club.
Teenage sensation Amad was the last player United signed in January, with the youngster signing from Atalanta back in January 2021 for £37.2million. Having only made nine appearances for the club, it is safe to say the Ivorian has not had the impact most would have imagined.
Now with Championship side Sunderland, the 20-year-old is starting to look the part in England's second tier, having been nominated for Player of the Month for November for his performances. It remains to be seen if the forward is part of Erik ten Hag's plans moving forward.
Often hailed as one of the club's best-ever signings, Bruno Fernandes' impact has been astronomical ever since his arrival back in January 2020. Arriving from Sporting, the Portugal international instantly hit the ground running by helping United finish third in the 2019/20 campaign.
Now seen as one of Ten Hag's senior members, Bruno will arrive fresh and ready following another strong tournament with Portugal, standing out as one of the side's most impressive performers in the Middle East. A superb addition.
A transfer at the other end of the scale, former Watford man Odion Ighalo joined the club on loan from Shanghai Shenhua back in January 2020. The now 33-year-old has endured a hit-and-miss career, but mustered just 23 appearances for United, scoring five goals. He now plays for Saudi club Al Hilal.
Dubbed one of the worst signings ever made by United, Alexis Sanchez failed to live up to the hype that surrounded his arrival. The Chile international was part of a swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan go the other way.
All in all, he made 45 appearances for United, scoring five goals - of which just three came in the Premier League. He then moved to Inter Milan after just 18 months at the club, ending a bitterly disappointing spell for the winger. He now plays in France with Marseille.
