Manchester United could be set to make Darwin Nunez their first summer signing with an agreement between the Red Devils and Benfica reportedly close.
Nunez, 22, has been one of Europe's most coveted strikers this summer following a remarkable season for Benfica. He has scored 34 goals in 41 appearances, including six in 10 Champions League appearances.
According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo (via The Sun), the Uruguayan centre-forward is a priority target for United boss Erik ten Hag, with an £85 million fee being suggested.
Nunez's pursuit holds merit given United's disappointing season, which has ended with a trophyless sixth-place finish in the Premier League.
Alongside a number of issues in both defense and midfield for the Red Devils, the goalscoring burden at the club has fallen on veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese star has scored 18 of United's 57 goals in the league this season, but at the age of 37 can't be expected to continue being the Red Devils savior.
Former United striker Diego Forlan is excited at the prospect of seeing his compatriot line up for the Red Devils.
He told Zach Lowy:
“Everyone needs to have patience. He’s getting more experience as time goes on. But no he wouldn’t be a bad signing for Manchester United and it would be nice to see him there."
He continued:
“It’s a club that gives you time, that makes you feel comfortable. It makes you feel in a familiar place, very cosy and nice. It would be spectacular to have him playing for Manchester United.”
Nunez has two years left on his current deal with Benfica. He has drawn the attention of the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid and Newcastle United alongside the Red Devils (per MEN).
Manchester United signing Darwin Nunez could end pursuit of RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku
Another forward Manchester United have been linked with this summer is RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku (as per the Daily Mail).
The 24-year-old has had a stunning season at the Red Bull Arena, scoring 35 goals in 51 appearances.
He recently commented on speculation over his future with United and PSG having been linked, saying (via MEN):
"Paris, I've always said it, it's my home, my heart club. I don't close any doors. Everything is possible in football. It's flattering to have the biggest clubs in the world interested in me."
PSG academy graduate Nkunku's love for Paris alongside United's potential acquisition of Nunez may end any chances of the Frenchman joining the Red Devils.
Erik ten Hag has other areas in his squad to attend to alongside the striker's position and therefore may only look to make one forward signing.

you see you are the one confusing yourself, I was just correcting what you said, if you read your comment very where you will see you are the one not understanding your self, you said Nunez will struggle just like the rest of strikers who played for Manu before, I was just letting you know that no matter the condition of Manu, strikers always prove their worth in united. so no need to be arguing with you on who need rebuilding or not, sometimes before posting comment try and understand what you wrote so we won't come here and be arguing pointless argument.

Can you please explain why Cristiano Ronaldo failed to carry Man Utd to top 4? You couldn't even finish above Arsenal and Tottenham mate. These teams are atrocious. Is Cristiano Ronaldo a bad CF? Really? You should demand a higher standard of performance. Your strikers can do a lot more than this if the system functions properly. That's why I said that as highly as I rate Núñez, he will struggle to score as many as he's capable of. He will not thrive at Man Utd. If you think ten Hag is going to change everything so quickly in one summer window, then you're wrong.

Strikers prove their worth at Man Utd? How many of these strikers produce the goods in clutch moments? Why haven't you won trophies in the last 5 years? I'm sure you'll find certain games where your strikers haven't turned up. Not every fault boils down to the defence. It's not as though Man Utd lose games with scorelines of 5-2, 4-3, 5-3, etc. Your strikers have been shít and just stat pad against the weak teams. When Man Utd really needs those goals in the big moments, those strikers put on their invisibility cloaks. You can go on defending your fraudulent team but that will only result in more mediocrity being served up to your fanbase. Go check my comments 2 years ago when Ole was in charge. I said he wasn't good enough and some of your players are way overrated. Man Utd fans all ganged up on me in huge numbers and never listened. Now the same folks are crying [Crylaugh] Maybe you should listen to me a bit more. Your system is flawed because you have the wrong players not suited to their roles and that ultimately affects the performances of your strikers.

hmmm so now they are not important, but this was the set of players who gave you people champions league Last season, all of the sudden they are not good, my prayers Is for all this transfer to happen then you will know what you loose.
Have you ever heard of the term "manager bounce"? This is especially applicable to clubs like Chelsea who sack managers frequently and don't give them time to establish and implement their idea of football for the long term. Even when we won the UCL, I never hyped up these players. The only exception was Azpilicueta of course and he's absolutely class for us. He's one of our greatest ever servants but clearly he's regressing with age. We can't be sentimental and keep players beyond their sell by date.

That would be a great Line Up next season if signings are made. Note: 1-Put De Gea just because he seems to be available next season but we need a modern GK not him.Henderson seems to be going but would have worked. 2-Didnt put Van Beek there because i didnt see him any where on my selection. AF update yr line ups please. 3-With the ryt price and ryt signings we will be better next season. #GGMU🔴⚪💯

And as for your concerns about the players leaving, the only player who was still playing at a really high level was Rüdiger. The rest of the lot are basically not good enough for Chelsea FC anymore. Do you really think Chelsea fans are devastated that the likes of Azpilicueta, Christensen, Alonso and potentially Jorginho and Kanté are leaving? Absolutely not. We need better players for sure. Conor Gallagher will play next to Mateo Kovačić next season. We might potentially sign another midfielder or Kanté might be the backup along with Gilmour or Loftus-Cheek. Yes we need to sign a couple of defenders at least. Levi Colwill is expected to stay at Chelsea and compete for a position. So I expect us to be fine. My main concern is the quality of players we bring in.

Am tired with this club, they always end up making a mistake, I Know Nunez is good but not on the same standard like Nkunku, why not buy Nkunku and a very good Right winger or rather buy both Nkunku and Nunez,If we allow Kloop to get Nkunku it will be very bad for Man UTD.
Nkuku isn’t that special
