Manchester United pulled 11 points clear in the race for Champions League qualification as they beat Brentford 2-1 in an entertaining tussle at Old Trafford.
First-half goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko got the job done, though Mathias Jensen's 87th-minute strike set up a grandstand finale in Monday's Premier League clash.
United's fast start should have been rewarded in the second minute when Kobbie Mainoo brilliantly slalomed his way into the penalty area before unselfishly squaring to Amad Diallo, who saw his shot cleared off the line by Sepp van den Berg.
Harry Maguire then forced a fine stop out of Caoimhin Kelleher from a Bruno Fernandes corner, but another set-piece from United's captain led to the opening goal, with Casemiro nodding in at the back post in the 11th minute.
Brentford responded brilliantly but saw three chances for top scorer Igor Thiago come and go, and only a sensational stop from Senne Lammens ensured Ayden Heaven did not turn Mikkel Damsgaard's inviting delivery into his own net.
And Keith Andrews' side were made to pay for their profligacy two minutes before the break when Fernandes bided his time before slipping in Sesko, who sat down Nathan Collins before smashing past Kelleher.
Dango Ouattara hit the post in the second half as the Bees tried to mount a response, and they got themselves on the scoresheet when Jensen guided a fine effort in off the left post.
The visitors almost snatched a point, but Damsgaard could only guide his header into the arms of Lammens as United held on for a potentially crucial win.
Data Debrief: Brilliant Bruno edges closer to Premier League record
Fernandes has been United's talisman under Michael Carrick, and he was once again at the forefront of everything good they did in attack. He was rewarded as he registered his 19th top-flight league assist this season.
The United captain is just one away from matching the competition's record, which is jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, while he also became the first United player to score or assist in 7+ consecutive Premier League appearances since Robin van Persie between November 2012 – January 2013 (10 in a row).
Fernandes is also just the third United player to score or assist in 8+ consecutive top-flight appearances at Old Trafford, after Cristiano Ronaldo between March and November 2008 (10 in a row) and Wayne Rooney between December 2009 and March 2010 (eight in a row).
And that clinical edge in front of goal worked out in United's favour. They registered an expected goals (xG) total of 1.27 from their 11 shots to Brentford's tally of 1.43 from their 12 attempts.
The Bees have failed to win any of their last six league games (D5 L1), their longest winless run since going nine without a victory between February and April 2024.
