Cristiano Ronaldo ended his barren goalscoring drought against Brighton but struggled to find the back of the net in Manchester United's first-half against Leeds.
The 37-year-old had gone six games without a goal before his stunning strike against Brighton, and he had a glorious opportunity to make it two from two against Leeds.
Paul Pogba beat Adam Forshaw on the left flank and played a dangerous ball towards the goalmouth with Ronaldo rushing to meet it at the back post.
But what looked to be a certain goal proved not to the case as Ronaldo fired straight at Leeds keeper Illan Meslier when it looked harder not to score.
Ronaldo was left with his head in his hands as Leeds were able to clear the ball away from danger.
Social media has reacted with astonishment to Ronaldo's sitter from a couple of yards out.
One person posted crying emojis with the caption: 'Ronaldo's just missed from two yards.'
Manchester United fan Ahmed Khan wrote: 'WTF Ronaldo, how did you miss from two yards.'
Another United fan wrote: 'Embarrassing miss from Ronaldo, robbing Pogba of another assist.'
Another Twitter user commented: 'Questions have to be asked of Ronaldo there. That was shocking.'
Despite Ronaldo's miss it was a positive first-half for the Red Devils who took a 2-0 lead into the break thanks to goals from Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes.
A Chelsea fan made light of Ronaldo missing from close range while Maguire scored his first Premier League goal of the season.
They wrote: 'Maguire leading by example. Ronaldo missed a sitter while he converts a thumping header.'
Another Twitter user commented: 'How did Ronaldo miss and Maguire net one in the same match?'
It is not the first time Ronaldo has missed a sitter this year, ballooning a similar effort over the bar from a cross against Norwich in December.
He also struck a poor penalty during United's FA Cup defeat to Middlesbrough.
Ronaldo though has often come to United's rescue this season, scoring 15 goals since his return.

People who didn't watch the match but only hear from mouths of people and also coming here to read articles will be the ones tweeting and giving silly comments about him. That ball came to him from behind and he had to try hard to bring it forward. That wasn't a clear chance form 2 yards as you claim it to be silly football fans and autty.
