Manchester United fans sang a new chant on Wednesday night, hitting out at Cristiano Ronaldo in their first competitive match since his bitter exit.

The Portuguese star's time at Old Trafford was curtailed by mutual consent after his blistering interview with Piers Morgan before the World Cup started.

At the club's home stadium during their Carabao Cup victory over Burnley, fans were heard on video singing their hearts out, dedicating their love to Manchester United, and targeting their former No. 7.

According to SportBible, fans were heard singing: 'I don't care about Ronnie. Ronnie don't care about me. All I care about is MUFC.'

Ahead of the Burnley clash, the club's matchday programme printed a brief, biographical tribute to their former player.

On November 22, the club announced that Ronaldo was no longer part of their ongoing plans after a mutual agreement, which left him as a free agent just eight days after his interview with Morgan, which criticised the running of Manchester United.

During two spells at Old Trafford, Ronaldo made 346 appearances, scoring 145 goals. However, his last appearance came during their 3-1 league defeat to Aston Villa on November 6.

Ronaldo was part of the Portugal squad that was at the World Cup in Qatar during November and December, but they were eliminated at the quarter-final stage by Morocco.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi, who is continually compared to Ronaldo across mainstream and social media, put in a talisman-like performance to guide Argentina to victory in the final.

There continues to be strong rumours circulating linking Ronaldo to Saudi Arabia's Al-Nassr, which would make the 37-year-old the richest paid athlete in the world, with the deal thought to be worth £175m-per-year for the next two and a half years.

He had kept quiet on social media after his country's World Cup elimination, but raised his head on Thursday to show himself on his Instagram Stories relaxing in the pool after a workout.

The former Real Madrid player has returned to the club to keep up training as the free agent tries to confirm the next stage of his career.

Meanwhile, Manchester United beat Burnley 2-0 through goals by Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford, to set up a League Cup quarter-final at home to surprise package Charlton Athletic.
