Manchester United give Anthony Martial injury update and team news vs Newcastle

Anthony Martial could return for Manchester United against Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday.

Martial missed the Europa League win over Omonia Nicosia with a back problem and has been absent for eight of United's 12 games this season, having sustained hamstring and Achilles injuries in July and August.

Harry Maguire is still unavailable with a thigh strain but could resume full training next week.

"Anthony Martial can be but we have to wait to see how he develops in the coming hours," United manager Erik ten Hag said. "Harry Maguire will not make this [game] but it doesn't take long, I think. I think next week he'll be back in team training or over [the] next week."

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek are not expected to return for United, either. Wan-Bissaka has been sidelined for the last five weeks and Van de Beek has been absent for the last six weeks due to a muscular injury.

United play current top-six teams in their next three matches and Newcastle arrive at Old Trafford a point behind United, having scored nine goals in their last two games. United then host Tottenham on Wednesday and travel to Chelsea on Sunday.

"They do really well," Ten Hag added of Newcastle. "I think it's a team who can play in high intensity with a lot of energy and that makes it a tough opponent. We know we have to play our best to get the right result.

"We always go from game to game. It gives another impulse to the team, to the belief. The spirit is already good but it will give a push to that spirit again. It will strengthen the belief in the squad.

"For the rest, we have to go from game to game. These are tough opponents but we are really looking forward [to them]. These are real tests for us as a squad to go into battle. And as I say, it delivers energy."
