Manchester United are closing on the signing of Manuel Ugarte after finally agreeing a fee with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Uruguay midfielder is en route to Manchester to undergo a medical, after agreeing terms with PSG for the 23-year-old's signature.

Ugarte is set to join United for an initial £42million, with a further £9million in add-ons. A formal agreement was reached between the two sides on Monday night.

Ugarte has been United's No.1 choice to add to their midfield this summer as they look for a long-term replacement for veteran anchorman Casemiro.

Sofyan Amrabat failed to impress while on loan from Fiorentina last season, and while Kobbie Mainoo has broken through into the first-team, Erik ten Hag has been desperate to add another layer of defensive protection into the heart of his side.

And while Ugarte struggled to make an impact in his debut season at PSG - having joined for £51million from Sporting Lisbon last summer - he has been United's top target, having again impressed club officials with his performances for Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay at this summer's Copa America.

And although it's fair to say Ugarte struggled with the demands of life at the Parc des Princes last term, he still made 37 appearances for Luis Enrique's side, contributing to their Ligue 1 title, Coupe de France and Trophee des Champions triumphs.

He is now set to become United's fifth signing of the summer, after the arrivals of Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui.

His arrival will further hasten the departure of Scotland international Scott McTominay, who is set to join Antonio Conte's Napoli in a £30million deal.
