Martial wins Manchester United Player of the Month for October

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has won the club's Player of the Month award after an impressive October.

Martial, 22, scored four goals for United last month, including an impressive brace in the 2-2 Premier League draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Previously to that game, Martial scored the equalising goal against Newcastle in a game which the Red Devils eventually won 3-2 - a result which is widely regarded to have saved Jose Mourinho from being sacked.

Martial's final outing of the month saw him play a major role in the 2-1 victory over Everton, with the French forward winning a penalty and scoring the second to end October on a high.

The Player of the Month awards marks a reversal of fortunes for Martial, who ran the risk of being sold this summer with Mourinho previously unimpressed by his work rate.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward blocked Martial from being sold, and the forward has since worked his way back into Mourinho's first-team plans with Alexis Sanchez struggling for form and fitness.

Despite returning in from the cold at United, Martial has rejected an opening contract extension from the club, while Standard Sport understands that Juventus, Tottenham and Bayern Munich are among a growing list of admirers.

Martial's United team-mate Nemanja Matic has called on the youngster to show more confidence in order to become a world-class players, saying: "If I had his ability with the ball and I was as quick as him then I wouldn’t pass to anyone and I would score every game!

"To be serious, he does need more confidence and this comes with results. When you don’t have results it is very difficult for players to have that high confidence.

"If we can get results over the next few games and improve as a team he will show that he is very important for us.

"The manager speaks with him about it. I have told him once."
