Mateus Fernandes: We want to change Tottenham's mentality and are eager to beat top teams

Following Tottenham's 2-0 away victory over Chelsea, midfielder Mateus Fernandes spoke to Sky Sports about the significance of the win for his team.

Reporter: Mateus, would you say today was the day you truly announced yourself as a Tottenham player and showed your full potential?

No, I've been here from day one. Some things take time to develop. Perhaps the chemistry between me, the coach, and my teammates wasn't at its best initially, but I've always had unwavering faith in myself and my brothers around me. In fact, our team has been playing well since the start of the season; sometimes we've just lacked a bit of luck in front of goal. But when we play like we did today, with everyone enjoying their football on the pitch, victory comes naturally. We deserved today's win, and we're ready for the tough battles ahead.

Reporter: Are you aware that you've just made history? Before tonight, Tottenham had won only once at Stamford Bridge since the Premier League was founded in 1992.

Yes, we came here to change the mentality of this club, our fans, and everyone involved. We aspire to challenge for the title and beat top teams. We give our all every day, doing everything we can to reach the level we showed today. We dedicate this victory to our fans.

Reporter: Mateus, this performance in your first game since becoming a father couldn't have been more perfect! How does it feel to be a new dad?

Yes, I want to dedicate all my love and gratitude to my family. This is a happy new chapter for me, and I thank my girlfriend, Laura, and our newborn son. We need to keep moving forward, and I am ready for the challenges ahead.

Reporter: A new dad should, in theory, be exhausted and unable to play with the intensity you showed today!

As I said, I feel very happy. I work hard in training and am always ready to answer the coach's call. Even in the last few minutes today, I was annoyed with myself for losing possession a few times in our own half. That is unacceptable to me; I must limit my errors to two or three per game at most. There is still room to improve certain aspects of my game, but I am incredibly proud of the team's overall performance today.

Reporter: Now, perhaps I can make you even happier – you've been named Man of the Match! Please welcome Tel, who will present you with the award.

Tel: Well deserved, my brother!

Mateus Fernandes: Thank you!
