Matt Doherty is set to have a medical at Wolves TODAY

Matt Doherty was due to have a medical at Wolves on Wednesday before rejoining the club on a free transfer – three years after his £15million move to Tottenham.

The Irishman, who is set to sign a three-year deal, would be Wolves’ first senior signing of a summer of change at Molineux.

He played for Wolves during one of the club’s most successful eras of modern times, when they won promotion from the Championship under Nuno Espirito Santo and established themselves in the top flight, reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in 2019 and the Europa League quarter-finals the following year.

Doherty had no such joy at Spurs nor Atletico Madrid, where he moved on a short-term deal last January. The 31-year-old is represented by Jorge Mendes’ powerful Gestifute agency, who have an excellent relationship with Wolves, and the deal is expected to proceed smoothly from here.

With Wolves looking mainly at loans, free transfers and young players with resale value this summer, the move for Doherty is a sensible option.

Meanwhile, tennis star Andy Murray’s former physio Phil Hayward has accepted a role as Wolves’ head of high performance after returning to Molineux in January.

Hayward’s first spell at Wolves ran from May 2008 to December 2019 before he left to become director of performance at Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy, subsequently linking up with Murray.

Hayward will oversee the performance and medical departments across the men’s, women’s and academy set-up. Alongside Hayward's appointment, Matt Butterfield has been promoted from head of academy physiotherapy to first team physio and Jon Murray has come in as first team osteopath.
