Real Madrid were humiliated by Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, with superstar attacker Kylian Mbappe becoming a lightning rod for criticism
Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius and Rodrygo felt the wrath of the angry Spanish media in the wake of Real Madrid's humiliation at Arsenal. The Gunners claimed a thumping 3-0 win over Los Blancos in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash.
Mbappe, Vinicius and Rodrygo started up-front for the visitors but endured a difficult night. Vinicius failed to have a shot on target and had only four touches in Arsenal's box, as well as losing four of his five duels. Rodrygo meanwhile had just one touch in the Gunners' box, failed to complete a dribble and had just one shot, which was blocked. Mbappe fared slightly better, though spurned a number of chances to put Madrid ahead.
The trio of attacking superstars drew intense criticism for their performances, with Madrid on the verge of going out. There is still a return leg to come at the Bernabeu next week, but Carlo Ancelotti's side need a miracle to go through.
Madrid have never overcome a 3-0 deficit in the Champions League knockouts. The last time they went out this early was 2020, when they were dumped out by Manchester City in the last 16.
With an exit at the quarter-finals a very real possibility, it is Madrid's superstar attack who have caught the fiercest backlash. Marca headlined their back page 'Humillados Pero... Para El Madrid No Hay Imposibles', which translates as 'Humiliated but... for Madrid nothing is impossible'.
The outlet was more damning online, writing: 'Debacle in London. Madrid abdicated in the same place where they were crowned champions just under a year ago.
'It had been a long time since Real Madrid had suffered such a severe blow in Europe. It came after a calamitous performance in which Vinicius led the resignation of an attacking trident that had passed without much fanfare at the Emirates.'

The paper delivered a further blast of the frontline trio. It said: 'Vinicius, Mbappe, and Rodrygo showed no signs of life. Without threatening, Madrid was a toy in the hands of an Arsenal side that battered them from start to finish.'
On Mbappe, they added he was 'failing and ineffective' and 'as grey as the jersey he wore'. All three of the attackers received a mark of 4/10 in Marca's match ratings, with Ancelotti conceding they were not at their best.
“The best players have to play, not sit on the bench. Then it's about organising things to make sure you're a compact unit, and we weren't able to do that tonight," the Madrid boss said. "It's a tough loss. We weren't expecting this. The team looked pretty good and well organised in the first half. Following the two set-piece goals, the team dropped off both mentally and physically.
"It was a difficult end to the game because we didn't see the reaction we're used to seeing from this team. The final 30 minutes were very poor. We have to do everything we can to try and recover. The chances are pretty slim but we have to try."
