Mbappe once 'agreed to join Liverpool' before making Real Madrid transfer

Kylian Mbappe reportedly agreed to join Liverpool two years ago only for PSG to knock back their bid - curtailing the move.

The Frenchman joined Real Madrid this summer, bringing to an end his seven years in Paris, but previously found himself at a crossroads with the prospect of joining Liverpool a realistic possibility. Back in the summer of 2022 Mbappe and PSG were at loggerheads regarding his future.

It looked as if the forward may head elsewhere with Los Blancos and Liverpool among those circling. It left the Reds with a clear run at Mbappe and they agreed personal terms over a switch to Anfield - only for PSG to knock back their club-record bid of £168million.

The Parisians were looking for double that, as per L'Equipe, and Mbappe's hopes of a switch to Liverpool were ended. The player ended up agreeing a new two-year deal with the option of a third year in May 2022, landing him a signing bonus on more influence.

Mbappe continued to have a chequered relationship with PSG and underlined his desire to run down his contract 12 months before its expiry, which angered the club's hierarchy as they attempted to strike a deal with a Saudi Arabian club in order to land a transfer fee.

Instead the World Cup winner remained at the Parc des Princes, scooping more domestic honours but missing out on the Champions League, before joining Real. They had courted him for years, dating back to his time as a teenager with Monaco.

Liverpool were linked with Mbappe throughout Klopp's tenure, although such a signing would've gone against the club's model, which often saw them sign players for more modest fees before developing them. The German underlined that view despite the reported bid - which was almost £90m more than Liverpool had ever paid for a player.

He once told Sky Germany : "I can say that I think he's a really good player but the financial conditions don't suit us at all. I wouldn't like to ruin the story now... but as far as I know, there's nothing to it. It's possible that someone else from the club is preparing something and wants to surprise me... that hasn't happened in the eight years that I've been here. That would be the first time."

In the months prior to Mbappe's PSG exit Klopp also claimed he would've been "surprised" if a club made a play at landing the Frenchman due to his wages and signing on bonuses. Real though landed his services, where he will earn £12.8m per year after tax.
