Reporters live from the England team's hotel in Mexico City observed a significant police presence around the hotel's perimeter. On site, Mexican fans were shouting loudly, the local supporters doing their utmost to disrupt the visiting team's mindset.
FIFA had initially considered moving the kick-off time forward by six hours to avoid severe thunderstorms and security risks, but both teams objected, and match officials ultimately overturned this adjustment.
The delayed confirmation of the match time did little to dampen the fervent atmosphere in Mexico City, especially when the entire England squad arrived at the hotel, greeted by a huge crowd. The Three Lions had intended to keep their accommodation address strictly confidential, but as the players disembarked the bus and entered the hotel lobby, they were met with a cacophony of boos and jeers from local fans.
Chants of "Mexico, Mexico" continuously rang out, with local fans doing everything they could to unsettle the visiting team.
The security team had anticipated crowd disturbances and had pre-emptively erected metal barriers to separate the players from the fans.
Reporter Angelina Kelly stated that the scale of the security deployment to welcome the England team was unprecedented.
"There's a massive police presence all around the England hotel, and locals say they've never seen so many military and police personnel gathered here," Kelly reported live from outside the team's hotel.
Facing the hostility of the home fans, Tuchel appeared composed, even waving to the crowd as he walked into the hotel. However, further disruptions are likely to continue, as England's accommodation in Mexico City is already well-known to local fans. Before the Round of 32 match between Mexico and Ecuador, local fans set off fireworks all night, preventing the Ecuadorian players from sleeping. After this South American team was eliminated, they formally lodged a complaint with FIFA.
The team prepared natural sleeping aids and noise-canceling earplugs for the England players to help them block out external noise.
Security Deployment Measures
England has made thorough preparations to prevent external interference during their stay.
Multiple layers of tight security perimeters have been set up around the hotel, with security personnel on duty around the clock; roadblocks have been installed in many places, and riot police are on patrol to prevent fans from approaching the hotel area. Tuchel led his team from the Kansas City training base to Mexico City, leaving only two days to prepare before Sunday evening's match.
On Wednesday, England came from behind to beat DR Congo 2-1, with Kane scoring twice in the second half, boosting team morale. If they can secure a victory at the Azteca Stadium, England will advance to the quarter-finals and face the winner between Brazil and Norway next Saturday in Miami, a highly anticipated clash.
Adapting to High-Altitude Playing Conditions
However, the match against Mexico presents numerous challenges, as the stadium is located at an altitude of 2240 meters, and local players are already accustomed to the high-altitude environment. The tight schedule leaves England insufficient time to adapt to the high-altitude climate, and Tuchel admitted that Mexico holds a significant innate advantage.
"The professional advice is either to arrive ten days early to adapt, which is too long a period for us; or to depart close to kick-off on the day of the match, but FIFA does not allow this. We have consulted other teams, and if they do not have sufficient adaptation time, they will depart very late on the day of the match. We can only make a compromise arrangement, the high-altitude disadvantage objectively exists and cannot be avoided."
When asked if Mexico had an unfair advantage, he bluntly stated: "Yes, they have a huge advantage."
