He left Liverpool for Real Madrid aged just 24 after scoring 158 goals in a staggering 297 games.
The Reds would go on to beat AC Milan the following season in a European Cup classic at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul after going down 3–0 at half-time.
But for Michael Owen, the hotly anticipated clash between Liverpool and Los Blancos on Saturday for the Champions League crown at the Stade de France won't be such a close affair.
Speaking exclusively to Sportsmail ahead of the game, Owen says: 'I think Liverpool are better than Madrid and they could blow them away. 3-1 or 3-0 is my prediction.
'I think they could beat them reasonably convincingly because they are an exceptional team at the minute and are too good for Madrid.'
Real pulled off another miraculous comeback to save themselves against Manchester City in the semi-final and Karim Benzema broke Chelsea’s hearts in the quarter-final.
'Madrid have just done phenomenally well to get to the final,' Owen continues.
'I'm sure they believe their name is on the title what with scrapping through the group stage and then of course Chelsea was incredible how they got through that. Manchester City was just mind-blowing how they beat them as well.
'But I think Liverpool are so experienced and so good. They won't want to get into a grind with them because I think Madrid are the ultimate team when it comes to know-how and winning close games.'
Despite being booed at Anfield when he returned from LaLiga with Newcastle United, the club he joined from Madrid, Owen's loyalty still lies firmly with Liverpool.
'Everyone knows I spent half my life at Liverpool. Don't get me wrong, I had a great year, met some great people and had just the most wonderful experience.
'It was a massive honour to play in that white shirt in that stadium and I loved every minute of it. But I of course favour Liverpool.'
We've been here before with these two. First, back in 1981, with the Reds winning 1-0. More recently in 2018, when Madrid emerged victorious via a 3-1 score-line in Kyiv.
So how will this meeting pan out? Owen warns Jürgen Klopp's men that Vinícius Jr could be a 'weapon' for Los Blancos.
'I think Liverpool will probably have a lot of the ball because I think Madrid will be keen to prevent spaces in behind them for the likes of Salah and Mane to run into.
'But I also think they will want to sit deep to actually encourage Liverpool to play that high line and then try to exploit it on the counter-attack.
'Any opponent will be looking at Liverpool and thinking the way we can beat them is to try and get in behind them.
'When Trent Alexander-Arnold moves forward, they've got Vinícius that could really hurt Liverpool in that position.
'Everybody does the same thing and everyone tries it. Whether you can actually do it is another matter.
'No question Madrid will be looking at Liverpool's high line, they'll be looking at Trent going forward a lot and they'll be thinking Vinícius is going to be a weapon.'
'I think Ancelotti will try to expose that area and Vinícius will be one of their key components,' Owen adds.
'Benzema is in great form of course, but I think it's in behind and Vinícius's pace that they might try to exploit.
'Liverpool play a very similar way no matter what, similar formation, and I don't think there will be any surprises from Liverpool.
'They'll play exactly how they normally play and it's normally good enough to win.
'Madrid are more likely to want it to be a tactical affair and I definitely expect them to be a counter-attacking team.'
Liverpool survived a huge scare in Spain to reach the final after a dismal first-half performance that saw Villarreal level the tie 2-2 on aggregate.
But the 2001 Ballon d'Or winner still believes Liverpool have enough in their armoury to outgun Real Madrid as long as they contain Benzema and Vinícius Jr.
'Benzema's had the most phenomenal season and he seems better than ever even though he's 34.
'I would expect Diaz to play. I think he's played himself into the team. These type of games are set up for Mo Salah.
'At the back you've got to be really careful. A lot of emphasis is put on the defenders of Liverpool because they play this high risk, high reward game and they do expose themselves.
'The likes of Virgil van Dijk, he's got pace and can get himself out of any trouble as well.
'I think if they can control Benzema and Vinícius, then Liverpool have got far too many good players.'
So is this Liverpool side currently the best team in the world? 'I think it's one of the best teams ever,' Owen claims.
'If Liverpool win the Champions League, three trophies and a minuscule away from winning a forth, I don't think there's ever been a team, certainly in England, that's been so good in one season.
'This is the best Liverpool team I have ever seen and they've had some good teams over the years, but this one is quite exceptional and led by an exceptional manager.'

I still stand by my earlier prediction 3:1 in favor of Liverpool. Liverpool only need to coverup for Arnold whenever he goes out, and that’s it. With this, Benzema will find it difficult getting crosses. As for the midfield, Liverpool will take care of it. Casemiro must be very careful as he may not escape cards this time. Salah, Mane and Dias will sure rattle Madrid’s defense. Madrid will mainly depend on counter attacks. Liverpool must be very careful while trying to keep Madrid offside. Also, LFC must take the last ten minutes of the game very serious, as Madrid uses these minutes wisely.

Funny, no wonder from 1966 uptil now the English national team has won nothing, u always think u special, but u are not, last year Madrid eliminated Liverpool 3:1 on aggregate, 2018 Madrid won 3:1 in the final, what is your reference Mr Owen, because Liverpool have won Carabao and FA cup in England they are better than Real Madrid? I like the way all these English pundits can analyze like they don’t use their brains! They think Liverpool having an easy ride to the finals by playing Benfica and Villarreal has tested their strength. Real Madrid defeated all the giants recently ( EPL giant City, Ligue 1 champion PSG and current UCL holder CHEALSEA all by 3-1 scores. Yet this dullard who was a failure at Real Madrid came up with bunch of unnecessary analysis giving Liverpool edge over Real Madrid as if this wasn’t the same Liverpool we defeated just last season though we had the most injuries in all of Europe. He thinks Real Madrid’s game is like a bread and butter. After Saturday, he’ll know that Real Madrid and UCL is a different love story. #apola14

It's not about delivering a sermon, it's about being objective and unsentimental if you want to make a good analysis. I'm a Real Madrid's fan, but with all the love and maybe good recent record I have over Liverpool and also in recent finals, I can't still disrespect Liverpool and say, Real will beat Liverpool with wide score. Though I want Real to win as every true fan will wish, but I understand that the tie will be a close one. It's what we are saying that your English pundits shouldn't underrate a team like Real Madrid

So u mean liverpool are better than city,Chelsea and psg joined together? Lol😂😂 liverpool would have their own mistakes. Tuchel watched Mauricio going out. Pep watched tuchel. Pep is more experienced than any coach in this era. So liverpool are not a big problem.😂 rm scored 14goals in just 6rounds just to tell you a message.
We are a better cup team than the teams you mention. We are not interested in how many goals you scored but how many you conceded. We have only lost once in the CL this year. That's our message to you. BTW the loss against Inter, was at Anfield because we had already beaten them 2-0 at the San Siro. They went down to 10 men at Anfield. Now it's Real and we eagerly look forward to it. Unfortunately we cannot play your history just the guys on the field.

Another failure is talking rubbish...The Brits never learn... Do you remember, "it's coming home" People need to learn. Again, thank you... this will serve as motivation for Real Madrid...
So you are thanking the 'failure' for helping you. Are they still a failure? I 'thank' Madrid for being our opponent. 😉

I have serious problems with English players who just turned pundits, their analysis can be too sentimental. Mr. Owen, even if you want to give edge to Liverpool because you feel that they are too strong for Real Madrid in your opinion, but considering some factors such as Real Madrid's impressive final records in recent years, her impressive record against Liverpool of recent (4 wins 1 draw), and the manner in which Real came to the final, should be factors to consider and reason that the final will be a close one, even when your prediction is in favor of Liverpool. This same Owen made a recent sentimental claim that Van Djik is the greatest defender in the history of football. How can you be so disrespectful to defenders like Sergio Ramos, Frank Berckenberg, Paolo Mandini, Carlos Puyol, Fabio Canavaro, etc, owing to their achievements with both their clubs and countries for the number of years at the top. He is a great defender, but he hasn't won much club wise, and nothing yet with his country, and moreover hasn't spent more years playing at the highest level like Ramos did.
