Middlesbrough boss Woodgate surprised Spurs haven't lifted a trophy for 12 years

Jonathan Woodgate cannot believe Spurs have not won a trophy in the 12 years since he scored with his nose to clinch the League Cup.

The Middlesbrough manager hosts his former club on Sunday in the third round of the FA Cup.

Woodgate was the match-winner against Chelsea in 2008 after a Dimitar Berbatov penalty had cancelled out Didier Drogba's first-half opener to force extra-time.

And he reflected: 'Jermaine Jenas was lining up a free-kick and I just thought I'd get a run on Drogba. I was brave, stuck my head in there, and it went in, lucky really. It was the best goal I've ever scored with my nose!

'As a kid, you always dream about playing in cup finals, so it was a dream come true really, and all my family were there. I can't remember the celebrations that night mind, it's all a bit of a blur!'

Woodgate added: 'But that was the only thing I won, which is obviously something you look back on with a bit of regret, especially with the teams I played in.

'We had that spell at Leeds, and we had a good team at Newcastle, but you can't say a team is great unless you win trophies.'

To that end, he has been disappointed by Spurs' subsequent barren period.

'I thought they would have won something under Mauricio Pochettino, I thought he did an amazing job, especially with the budget he had,' said Woodgate.

'But I'm sure that (silverware) is on the horizon now with Jose Mourinho, because he's a serial winner.'

Woodgate the manager is hoping he fares better in this competition than he did as a player, recalling his FA Cup debut with Leeds.

'I was sent off against Rushden and Diamonds - 18-year-old, I rattled someone. I was devastated,' he said.

'But I didn't win many games in the FA Cup, not that I can remember anyway. Let's hope my luck changes.'
