Mikel Arteta has already told Chelsea why Emile Smith Rowe is perfect deadline day signing

Chelsea are continuing their pursuit of a versatile attacker ahead of the transfer window closing later this week.

We are now into the final three days of the summer window and the Blues' business is nearly all complete. However, the club remain in the market for a winger who can also play in the middle as a No.10, with a big list of targets being considered in the latter stages of the window.

Now, reports are claiming Chelsea have expressed an interest in Arsenal attacker Emile Smith Rowe. The 23-year-old has three years remaining on his deal with the Gunners but is not fancied by Mikel Arteta at the moment. Smith Rowe has not played in a single minute in the Premier League yet this season and is being linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium. He has the likes of Leandro Trossard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and even Fabio Vieira ahead of him in the pecking order in north London.

Chelsea are said to be long-term admirers of Smith Rowe and he certainly fits the profile of the type of attacker they want to add to their ranks before the transfer deadline. Smith Rowe can play virtually all across the front-line – something Mauricio Pochettino wants in whoever he signs.

In fact, Arteta has already spoken about the versatility of Smith Rowe and what he can offer the team. "I think Smith Rowe can play in four positions," Arteta said last year. "He can play as a left winger, he can play as a left attacking midfielder, right attacking midfielder and he can play as a nine; very, very well, I think."

There is doubt over Smith Rowe's future at the Emirates Stadium but the three-time England international said back in June that he will not give up at Arsenal despite not being one of the first names on the team sheet anymore. He said in an interview with The Times: "Arsenal are my club and I'm not going to give up until [Arteta] says he doesn't want me.

"But that is not the case. He wants me as part of the team and I want to fight for my place and get back in the team."

The attacker Chelsea want would – bar any surprises – will be the club's last signing of the summer transfer window. However, there is still business to do.

Bayern Munich are keen on Trevoh Chalobah with Thomas Tuchel considering making a move for the defender. Nothing is advanced yet, however, but things could advance in the coming days with the German champions wanting another central defender.

There is still some doubt over Conor Gallagher's future. West Ham United are still sniffing around the England international. Gallagher, though, has started all three Premier League games for Chelsea this season.
