What is the UEFA Men's Player of the Year award?
The award recognises the best players, irrespective of nationality, playing for a club within the territory of a UEFA member association during the past season. Players are judged on their performances in all competitions – domestic, continental and international.
How were the players shortlisted?
The shortlist of three players was selected by a jury comprising the 80 coaches of the clubs that participated in the group stages of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League (32) and UEFA Europa League (48), along with 55 journalists selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) group, representing each of UEFA's member associations.
Jury members chose their top three players, with the first receiving five points, the second three and the third one. Coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own team.
The other award shortlists

Some people are just so dumb. This is not "The best FIFA men's player award"or "Balon d'or award"This is "UEFA men's player of the year" award, basically for performances in champions league and UEFA competitions. Ronaldo deserves the award and I'm very sure he'll win it.Frankly, the 3 final nominees deserves the spot over Messi. But Messi will definitely make the final 3 of the balon d'or.

Guys, this is UEFA's award. Coaches who participated in this year's UEFA competitions nominated the players.... So probably the award was based on performance in UEFA competitions. Even Griezmann who won the Europa League was nominated further of Messi. Although Messi scored more goals, was more consistent in his performances and was arguably the best footballer of the year, he wasn't as influential in the Champions League as Ronaldo, Modric or Salah were. So though I favor Messi as the current best footballer, he shouldn't have been in the list. Just my opinion!

If I were to round up the top 3 players in percentage to win it would look; Ronaldo:40% Modric:40% Salah:20% Salah would've had a higher chance of winning if he had won champions league with Liverpool. Both modric and Ronaldo won it with RM and both players were outstanding in WC. Ronaldo literally carried Portugal on his back with him until Uruguay came along. Modric was the most outstanding player for Croatia not to mention he won the FIFA best award. The only thing that Ronaldo has over Modric for winning this award is that he was the top scorer in CL.

by your own criteria eufa. apart from a little performance in the world cup. who else have play total football throughout the season/year than messi? why are you using a seven match tournament to determine a best player? and even it starts with qualifying matches. again who carry agentina the world cup? why didn't messi win this in 2014? being in the final, no player can match messi's stats this season. from the begining of the season/year and counting over 60 matches non of your 3 can match messi. build your so call point from begining, not the end. examination has many subjects, each has a score, at the end you'll total all the marks, then you,ll have a credible winner and no one will complain. so shall this be

I still don't understand why the few fans that Messi should be managing right here in Africa have decided to be so ignorant over some cheap information. Any awards that is strictly UEFA based should have no player who didn't do well in the UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, THE UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE e.t.c. They keep screaming Messi as dough their brains are half-baked. Even as the God of football, soccer or what ever name you best know the game with, if Uncle Ronaldo should fall short in performance in any of the aforementioned competitions, I will look straight to his name and delete it from the category of players who Merits it at the moment. Well, I thank God that I grew up hearing about the God of soccer but I grew up to meet him. CRISTIANO CHUKWUEBUKA RONALDO. I rest my case!!!

Those who are crying over the nomination are just shallow fans at best. CR7 had a better goal-per game performance across all competitions this year. CR7 is CL top scorer and won the title for the 3rd time running and a record 5th time. CR7 was 2nd highest goal scorer in the WC In Russia with a hattrick against favourites Spain. Messi on his part, did well on the domestic scene by helping Barca to the title but so did Neymar with PSG and De Bruneyn with City. Remember laliga isn't superior to the other domestic leagues. So you really don't have any arguments against CR7 winning this again.

Bruh this trophy is restricted to UEFA competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup. La Liga and CDR have nothing to do with this. Messi was a flop in UCL this season, where was he against Roma. The only outstanding performance was against Chelsea. Meanwhile Ronaldo was the top scorer, and without him, I doubt Madrid would’ve reached the semifinals. And Salah practically carried Liverpool to the final so yeah.
