Morecambe's match against Bolton was suspended for 11 minutes on Saturday after allegations of racist abuse from the home fans towards the visitors' bench - with the referee taking both sets of players off the pitch.

The incident occurred towards the end of the game, with claims a lighter had been thrown towards the Bolton dugout.

Bolton players on the bench were allegedly subjected to abuse, as were members of the club's coaching staff.

Wanderers boss Ian Evett walked onto the pitch with the game entering stoppage time and remonstrated with referee Ross Joyce before he suspended the game with ten minutes to go.

An announcer at the Mazuma Stadium confirmed the game was being halted due to 'behaviour of both sets of supporters' - with both teams going down the tunnel - and Evett later came back out to plead for calm from the crowd.

Bolton's official Twitter account wrote: 'With Ian Evatt furious with something said in the stands by a home fan behind the dugout, the referee has pulled the players off the pitch.

'One home fan had already been ejected a few minutes ago.'

Just after full time, The Shrimps also released a statement saying: 'Morecambe Football Club are aware of a series of incidents and allegations that have been made during Saturday's fixture against Bolton Wanderers in Sky Bet League One.

'The Club will work with all relevant authorities to investigate the above.

'Morecambe FC will be making no further comment at this time.'

Bolton had been trailing 1-0 before the game was halted and play eventually restarted after ten minutes.

Wanderers then equalised in dramatic fashion as Amadou Bakayoko struck in the 14th minute of added time to share the spoils, sparking Bolton fans to invade the pitch.

Evatt was left furious with the abuse allegedly directed at his players, claiming they had been receiving it from kick off.

'From minute one we were getting abuse from fans and that is not acceptable,' he said after the game.

'I would have taken the players off myself if the referee hadn't because if one of us gets abused we all get abused and we stand together.

'We are sportsmen and we are professional people but for whatever reason people think it gives them a divine right to say whatever they want through social media or in person and there has to be accountability.

'It's disgusting and there is no place for it in football or life in general and we have to do the utmost to stamp it out and as an industry we have to come as one.'

Morecambe manager Stephen Robinson said: 'There are lots of accusations going about and I'm sure the authorities will deal with it but the stoppage didn't help us because we were on top at that stage but we didn't manage the game out and we got punished for bad decisions.

'I'm really frustrated because we should have won the game and picked up three important points which we deserved.

'We played some really good stuff in horrendous conditions against an in-form side.'

Bolton had been reduced to 10 men when Ricardo Santos was sent off for a handball in the box leading to Cole Stockton’s penalty miss.

Stockton made amends two minutes later with a close-range finish but the game turned after the stoppage thanks to substitute Bakayoko's leveller.

Elsewhere in League One, Oxford United's clash against Portsmouth was delayed in the second half due to a medical incident at the Kassam Stadium.

'The second half of the game will be delayed here due to a medical incident,' wrote Oxford's official Twitter account.

Portsmouth's official Twitter account added: 'It has been announced over the PA system that the start of the second half will be delayed due to an incident.'

Play eventually restarted 25 minutes later than planned.
