Jose Mourinho was frustrated but not surprised by the way his squad players blew their chance to impress and secure Manchester United top spot in their Champions League group.
Already assured of knockout phase football next year, the Portuguese made eight changes for Wednesday's match at Valencia as injuries took their toll ahead of the trip to Liverpool.
United knew victory at the Mestalla would see them top Group H in the unlikely event that Juventus slipped up in Switzerland, but Mourinho's men failed to do their bit as the improbable played out at Young Boys.
The Serie A giants lost 2-1 at the same time that United fell by the same scoreline in Spain, where a Carlos Soler strike and Phil Jones own goal meant substitute Marcus Rashford's late strike was just a consolation effort.
None of those brought in did themselves any favours, so it was little wonder that Mourinho looked at the end of his tether and offered the response of 'not pleased' in a brusque start to the press conference.
'I think that to qualify in this group is a success,' the United boss said. 'Never a failure. To finish second in this group is always a success.
'Before the game I told the players that if we win tonight and Juventus win, we did our job.
'If we don't win and Juventus doesn't win, we can blame ourselves.
'I don't think the draw finishing first or second - apart from a couple of clubs that are clearly much better than the others - I don't think the draw will be significantly different...
'But I expect (better) from my players, especially players that week in, week out, you ask me 'why don't they play?', 'why they don't they start?'
'(It) was a good match to play, a match without any kind of pressure, a match in a competition that everybody likes to play.
'And, in the end, my team improved, really, when I made the changes that I didn't want to make, which is a little bit of frustration because I didn't want to play the three players that I played in the second half.'
Ashley Young replaced the injured Marcos Rojo after a torrid first half, while Rashford came on for summer signing Fred and Jesse Lingard was brought on for Romelu Lukaku.
Paul Pogba failed to shine after starting the last two matches on the bench, while Eric Bailly and Andreas Pereira also struggled to make an impact.
Asked if he had learned anything about his players, Mourinho retorted: 'No, maybe you did. Not me.
'I didn't learn anything from this game. Anything. Nothing that happened surprised me at all.'
It was a cutting response from Mourinho, whose squad players' performances at the Mestalla only reinforced long-standing opinions.

They’re exactly that; fringe players! I’m sure the manager was hoping for a selection dilemma for game against Liverpool when he put that squad out. I guess in some respects, he’s not going to have selection headaches...

And this group of FLOPS get paid every week. With this shambolic display. What a shame!! They don't deserve to wear Manutd jersey. Rashford is the only true Manutd player in that team of flops. Jones should have chosen a different career path, he doesn't have any business with football.😡

It's shocking how the English Press have picked on Jose, imagine how many one on ones Rashford has missed and it's Jose's fault, for me this Man has tried with the average players he has, no coach can perform with the current Man U players not even Pep.So pliz haters swallow your pride and applaud this man ,Man U need better players how many players in the current squad can get into Man City team or Chelsea ,on David the keeper

When i watched ManU play against Arsenal & Fulham, i was really interested, enthusiastic with the fast game, United were attacking with everything they got from the 1st minute till the end. So i was excited about their game against Valencia. When i was watching the first half, i was yawning and then in the early second half i fell asleep. Why? Because the match was boring, i expected that same energy against Arsenal, Fulham but it was not there. Now i know what Mou meant when he said his players are 'under fire' , 'not mad dogs'.....I don't want to see most of these players to play against Liverpool or we're done for! .....I also feel sad for Mason Greenwood and James Garner, they didn't get chance to play in the second half because United conceded 2 goals in the first 48 minutes.... I'm just dissatisfied with the players who played poorly against Valencia...[Cry][Cry][Cry]GGMU!![Comeon][Cry][Cry][Cry]

Useless coach always sees the bad side of his players. All the time when they don't play well it's their fault when they do you take glory. Mourhino you are not better than any of the fringe players some of them can even coach more than you do. Failure

u see.. that's why they don't play regularly.. united have some bang average players who r not even good enough to get into the championship teams... from year on year we kept these players for nothing & when the time came they put a very emabarrasing display on pitch... academy players would have played better than these bunch of craps...

They’re exactly that; fringe players. They did nothing to convince anyone of their inclusion to the starters. Even Lukaku was poor. His back was turned to goal the entire match. A very poor showing...

I blame Mourinho and his starting line ups. Seems to just throw players in and expect things to work. Why was Fellaini in there? CBs Bailly and Rojo . Wing backs Dalot and Young. Mid Pereira Pogba and Fred . Attacking Mid Mata. Gunning would be Rashford and Any other. Even someone from the youth team. This would include his so called "fringe players" be a cohesive and play some lovely football. Why on Earth is Fellaini near that team?
Mou had to bring Rashford Lingard at last or else we would have not scored at all... And yes Lot to say... Fellaini has been so cracked up.... I don't know why don't they keep possession... Antonio Valencia is fully nonsense regarding this... You cant give a cross then why the hell you are in full backs and also with a captain armband.. We dont have a playmaker... 👀blaming Mou is senseless... He keeps the player on bench, you blame him... When he give them chances, they dont perform, you blame him?! Mou isnt spoonfeeding them how to play... They have to perform... And I was fed up with Andreas, Fred, Bailly. I defended them when heard nonsense, coz they are my personal favourites... But what ya, what are you doing!??? Valencia have been switching the play... Rojo inspite of taking the ball, positions himself to defend goalwise... Bullshit! Cried from minute 1... Right from minute 1 manU were so sloppy... Valencia stupid, Rojo never suits LB, fellaini bullshit, Andreas nonsense, fred under performed, Pogba finished, Lukaku out of control... Out of playing XI, 7 are highlighted.... can feel the pain... Coz cant expect this shit coming from a win over fulham... Its like worst than what we played against palace AMD Southampton....!! 👀😾

If I were a Man United supporter I'd expect better judgement on players that cost and arm and a leg to being to the club. With each passing month, Mourinho looks more and more like a manager of the past. He hasn't moved with the times. He is fast becoming the very person he slaughtered Arsène Wenger for being. And it is absolutely glorious because he is an complete and utter t0$$¿r.

Why is it every player you have signed had been rubbish..it can't be just players ..it's obvious they are lacking coaching..

Such a dilemma it is. Different players on the field but same rubbish performance. At times it make you wonder if they actually have training session.
